Description A shoot in South Beach Florida... lots of fun and as you can imagine, lots of bystanders having a look at what was going on!

Model: Emma Alexa

Strobist: SB800 into soft box camera left in front of model; SB800 as highlight camera right, behind model. Sun over photographer's shoulder - the main shadow behind is the sun. Used max sync speed to underexpose the environment while keeping the focus on the subject.

Nice gallery, but srsly, why shooting @ F18?

Fair question! I was using flash so I was limited to max sync speed of 1/250th (this was in the days before the new pocket wizards allowed me to go well beyond that speed). At ISO 200 which is the min standard setting for a D3, F18 was the setting that exposed the extremely bright day correctly.

Having said that, F18 does introduce some blur because of the tiny aperture, so it probably would have been better to use the ISO "Low" setting and bump up the aperture a bit... or even use an ND filter if I'd had one with me

Heh - no, but they did "talk on their phones" for quite a while, while conveniently pointing the camera at us...

Wow Great Strobist Shot! the colour and light is superb. Did you have the strobes on TLS or did you set them manually? Also was the softbox a EZYBox? Apollogies for the questions, I'm just getting into strobist photography myself.

Thanks Tony! I did use TTL (the Nikon version) as the lighting was pretty dynamic out there. I set the flash to overexpose by a stop or so, and then underexposed the camera by a stop or so.

In effect that meant Emma was correctly exposed but the background was underexposed (and therefore had more saturated colours).

The softbox was actually a lastolite apollo - much smaller and lighter than an ezybox, though I like both.

Good luck with your adventure into strobist photography - it's frustrating and exhilerating in equal measure!!

Richard
