Do you any system to work out your composition, Rich, or is it just "instinct and eye", as it were?

This isn't a critique - merely curiosity on my part. I am quite fond of applying the Golden Section to some of my works (esp. my photography), as you may be aware.

Thanks for asking - there's no system, I go by eye and feeling. But I will look at the finished piece and think about why it worked. And sometimes when I'm stuck I'll turn a piece upside down, that's often helpful.

I know the Golden Section and that seems like a useful approach.

I sometimes wonder if I rely on the Golden Section too much, possibly making some of my stuff too formulaic?

I like your work, you have a style, I see a piece and know it's you. A little asymmetry is a good thing. But you know, everyone has to do what's right for him or her - do what you feel is always my advice.
