Now that I'm on a blackout poetry kick, I ran through the #DailyPoetics gallery today and commented sporadically.

OMG...this is one of the finest pieces of conceptual art I have ever seen...
Your vision is contemporary and unique...
Fine Art...you should be having exhibitions in real life...your pieces might be wanted for collectors of fine contemporary art...and you could sell them for a lot of money, no kidding

man
- is it a hymn book you started off with? Long time ago - when internet started - I put on a quiz about first line of novels, just fro friends. Now with this you made me think about a "poll" in a similar way ...

My wife thought it was a hymn book, too, when I showed her the piece, but it was a poetry anthology from 1929. Lots of the pieces are from the 19th century, so they have a certain old-fashioned feeling from that time. There are actually a few good poems in it. But there are many that are not so good. And the pages are wonderfully browned. So... it's gradually being taken apart.
Good poll idea!

Taking apart - this is the word, for sure. And poetry - not really so close to my sort of reception. Bjt certainly love the idea and the results ...
Also I am also moved by the closeness of emotions in history when compared to present day ...

That's right. Human emotions are what they were, though we think we are new kinds of people with our technology and our (relative) wealth. It is fun sometimes to read old poetry, because there is no pressure to enjoy it - it is not hip or happening - if I condemn it or do not get it no one will care - but if I come across lines that speak to me they are doing it in a very direct way.

I do not have so many words for it, not only because you explained it perfectly well. And it goes back well beyond 19th or 18th century - technolgy? pfffhhh ..

J. S. Bach is a big favorite in our house, though so are Ellington, Coltrane, the Beatles, and brand new people too. And that's just to speak of music...
I will give technology this - it lets us talk to each other!
But the people and the talking (and art) are what matter.

Absolutely so. But this is exactly what is is all about. Bach (and musical artists which are before sheet music was invented) they all had the same emotions (!) and expessed them the (hopelfully) the best possible way. We don not know, because it was not recorded in any way .. Just speaking about music, btw.

Agreed, absolutely. When the archaeologists found that little bone flute earlier this year - I think it was 40,000 years old? - we would probably feel something if somehow we heard the first music made on it... Quite a thought.

I used to work in Cyprus for my PhD-thesis long years ago. There are many, many documents of civilization at least 6000 years old (bronze age). I always found that absolutely fascinating (I even had the chance to help out some archeologists with an "emergency" dig of a bronze-age grave in a road dig). Especially when it comes to art and figures, I just

Not to be too poetic... but it makes me feel smaller and bigger at the same time, to picture the very old artifacts... especially holding them in one's own hand. My own life is smaller, but humanity is larger, if you will...

EintoeRn In reply to RichardLeach [2009-09-26 17:12:10 +0000 UTC]
Not to be too philosophical. You are certainly right about touching old artifacts, but I am very doubtful about mankind being great. Each individual struggles to find his/her way and deserves every support and encouragement, but the whole concept of mankind in nature, I am very sceptical, not only in geological terms, but of course as well ...

I hear you. Well, this kind of discussion goes better in person, with or
But I think you make a good point. When humanity is thought of as a concept, an idea, an ideal, rather than as the collection of struggling, vulnerable individuals we are - not so good. For what may not be sacrificed for such a great ideal?
Sometimes - even often - individuals become concepts to other people. And it is no problem to think them out of existence. As easy as changing one's mind. Then doing them physical harm or withholding care from them becomes easy. My own country, with all its wealth, withholds much from its less well-to-do citizens. They are only an idea to some political leaders, rather than real people.
Ah... that is enough from me. Thanks for your patience if you have read this!

Concepts for other people (politicians and probably much more "musicians" and movie stars) - this is certainly another aspect. Maybe - as I was never yery much affected - I am not that aware. But I guess that you are certainly right.
