This is one awesome shot!! Well cropped. Much better than the whole bird would have been. That beak is just scary!!!

Thank you. I cropped the owl because someone's head got in the way. But in the end it was more dramatic.

there is just so much to do in the area that I really don't know about. I will have to search out some cool things!

It always amazes me that shots like this can be so arresting despite not having the entire subject in it. Now how do I train my brain to see it when it's behind the camera?

Amazing shot Richard!

There were spectator heads blocking out part of the bird. But after I cropped them out, I liked the look. I didn't really "see" this. I had my camera in continous shutter and focus mode from the time it left its roost. Only a portion were usable, but this one was amazingly sharp.

Hmmmm...I guess I need to train my brain to see it when cropping then!

I should also revisit continuous shutter and focus mode. I never liked the continuous shutter and didn't have much luck with continuous focus because I end up with it focusing on branches or grass as the animal moves. I've ended up doing everything manually and single shot mostly because my patience at sorting through multiple shots that are only slightly different isn't very long!

Every shot didn't come out in focus, but I think it worked fairly well probably because the birds were flying right into the camera location.

I didn't expect every shot to come out but for some it took a far too long, in my opinion, to zoom in and out trying to find the focus. I really wasn't impressed but I'm willing to try again.

Thanks. Sometimes the variable focus function on my camera hits it dead on.

IMHO, way better than the others, so far. The detail is far greater and the backlighting on the wing and tail feathers is stunning; you can even see where the feathers are overlapping. Generally, the composition is very good too. The whole of the bird isn't in shot but it doesn't need to be, the dof draws the viewer straight to the eyes and therefore to the heart of the matter.

Well done, Richard.

Thank you Steve. The owl was so close to me that part of the picture was obscured by the lady's hair who was sitting next to me. So I cropped to put the owl's face on a thirds line.
