Keep telling yourself that you're right. You'll find that anyone who isn't bigoted against digital art will agree with me.

Enjoy your ignorant, bitter existence.

If you're not an artist to begin with, and have no talent, all that Photoshop will do for you is allow you to perpetrate abominations at a record pace.

Again, depends on the process used.
Some people literally 'paint' over a photo - anyone can do that to a reasonable degree of success. No talent required.
Some people even simply apply a filter, and then have the audacity to call the result a "digital painting"!

It may have been going on for a while... cf. the Hockney–Falco thesis that a good deal of the progress of realism in Western art is due to use of optical aids such as the camera obscura and various combinations of mirrors. If Vermeer, say, used a camera obscura, does that mean he has to be drummed out of the artistic world? And, as one whose ability to produce comely images approaches zero, I find that talented artists generally underestimate how hard it is for non-artists to "cheat." I couldn't paint over a photo to save my life.

They can call it whatever they want. If people like it, they like it. You have no right to tell them that what they do isn't art just because you don't like it.

I DO wish you'd stop putting words into my mouth.

"and then have the audacity to call the result a "digital painting"!"

This says that you don't feel that it is a digital painting. I'm not putting words in your mouth, I'm pointing out your own words to you. The fact that you then disagree with them only tells me that you aren't thinking about what you're saying until after you say it.

For that matter, when is the last time you saw someone apply a filter to a photograph and then call it a "digital painting?" Show me one.

No, that's because it ISN'T a digital painting!

And I would not dream of 'showing someone up' like that, even if I don't approve of what they're doing! Have some respect! Jeez...

haha, sorry to butt in--but I gotta say; I think tradition artwork is easier--you have more pen control, and no matter how hard you try to replicate that through a tablet, it's not the real thing. I find digital art a lot harder--though both have their pros and cons.
I don't think you can compare the two well.

And this is a fantastic piece I'm angry at it being too good, if that makes any sense ^^

Facenna In reply to Venry [2010-04-19 09:10:57 +0000 UTC]

Don't forget the Cintiq, which solves a lot of those pen problems!

Anyway, I have no problem with actual digital painting - ie: using the medium the way you would use a traditional medium in a program that emulates traditional media.

It's the way people use Photoshop that bugs me. Some tutorials I've seen have greatly shocked and disappointed me, as I had assumed that the artist had solved a lot more problems than they actually had!

Just my personal point of view on the matter!

Venry In reply to Facenna [2010-04-21 23:47:49 +0000 UTC]

haha, indeed.

I guess I do see your point, but I think photoshop is mean to just enhance, not produce that effect without the painting.

I agree. I'm total crap at digital and I feel like I have more control over what I'm doing on paper. I think photoshop and SAI are hard as hell.

Nope, nothin' but me and my good old little mouse-pad. On my laptop. My mouse is somewhat unpredictable so it's kind of useless.

I put all of this into my work as well, although it is "only" digitally done. I originally come from traditional arts and know that the traditinal stuff is not valued enough at DA in general but this does not mean automatiacally that digital art is heartless.

zippythewildone In reply to ??? [2010-04-18 10:31:41 +0000 UTC]

Some artists don't have money to put into their art so their forced to use photoshop to put time and passion into their work.
