Description
Salvation Army War MemorialThis is the first in a few photos I took recently in the city centre of Hull.
I toiled for a while over whether or not to make the picture black and white, the three deciding factors being;
A) I am trying not to get in to the habit of touching every photograph with photoshop,
B) I remembered that this is a statue and not two real men - while a moodier picture would have looked better with two human subjects, I don't think it did the statue justice, and
C) I felt guilty about taking the colour out of that beautiful blue sky! (A rarity in Hull).
The only thing I don't like about this picture is the slight overexposure, due mainly to me accidentally leaving a longer exposure setting on my camera. Whoops!

I've always liked that statue in town, I like the angle makes it look like it stands on it's own, rather than being surrounded by the dung heap that is HULL

that is a beautiful sky, either way i think the picture would have worked well as black and white also... i like the angle you took this at to, its not a boring full on statue shot, you made it interesting

I'm glad you left it in colour. The sky is a lovely blue and it gives a really great contrast to the white statue... The shadows on the statue give quite a nice effect, too. It would be nice to have a slightly smaller file size, but not too small because you don't want to lose the detail!
Great shot.

Great picture, it's rare to see Hull in such a good light. You did so well...

I think it was a good choice to leave the colour. The blue sky contrasts well with the white of the statue. I think also that you chose a clever perspective angle, it gives more life to the characters..simply because they have no context. I hope I am making myself clear. A well taken photograph.
One thing I would say is it is better to chuck the shot in PS and resize it to something like 1000x900 for landscape and 800x600 for portrait. Simply because it allows an easier view in full view. Those aren't exact just a general idea really.

I take your point, someone else mentioned the size of 'onion'. Devart has a minimum resolution though don't they? And I don't know if I'll eventually want a print account.

I think print accounts are different altogether, in terms of you having to submit a certain resolution image seperately. But I am not sure. And I would pay close attention to the new policy devart has just enforced before signing up. They do have a minimum resolution but I think it is something like 600xsomething or another. I am not sure of the exact measurements.
