Niice! Everything's in order, just this: try using larger aperture to get a little more depth-of-field in there. Then it'd be peach all the way.

I agree with some of the previous comments that identified the composition as a problem. Iβd say this is because the bee is sitting centrally in the shot, whereas if it was set off to one side it would be more visually interesting. I think a good way to crop it would be taking off some of the left and some of the top, which would get rid of some of the excess space hence tightening the image and bringing more focus on the bee.
Anyway, I really like the shapes and textures in the shot, the fluff of his coat is beautiful and I like how some of it remains sharp while other areas fall out of focus, I think that enhances the whole image β the bee wouldnβt near as interesting if he was all in focus.
The only other thing Iβd say about this shot, which isnβt really something you can control, would be the position of the leaves itβs sitting on. I like the one on the right which it has its legs sitting on, but the seed head that crosses across his body isnβt so great. I think it kind of obscures him a bit too much and we lose some of the coolness of his shape.
But anyway, itβs a pretty nice macro, good work.

The most detailed comment I ever had
Thanks, I tend to agree a little about the cropping, havent had chance to check that out yet.
As for the position of grass etc... hell, he wasnt gonna stick around unless I paid him a bit more - that suit costs money y'know!

Haha... I know you can't control the bees, thought it was worth pointing out though. Anyway, no worries.

Thanks.
Why don't you have many deviations BTW?

I wanted to start afresh with the new year so I put all my old crap into storage. I hate clutter.

Amazing photo, I think the main subject in this picture is the bee, and that's all there should be, I think anything more would steal my attention, and the title complements the photo perfectly, congratulations

I feel you could have cropped a little bit closer on the left side.

I think you have a point there, I was so pleased with how this picture didnt need any 'fiddling' I didnt think about cropping

Woo...the focus on this is incredible, considering the little bastards have a tendency to fly away if you get close to them. I, personally, like the composition - the ear of wildgrass he's perched on is pretty too, and the blurred background gives perspective

Yeah I was chasing them around for ages until I came across this one (obviously knackered) in the grass.
Still took a fair few shots of the wee chap before one that I was happy with

good colors, but I don't like the composition... (but I do know how hard it is to get a good shot of a bee... always moving...)
cheers

Thanks for the comment, constructive criticism is always appreciated....
However, what would be more constructive would be how you think it SHOULD be composed...
any thoughts?

yup, you're right
so, my choice of composition for macro shot involving bees and similar insects is a lateral shot, possibly when they'r landing or taking of. Check out duende's gallery, it has a shot I love.
but, as I said before, I never did one of those
good job anyway, I like your colors

You're right, I looked at the dragonfly picture, and was well impressed.
I think that this one is down to personal opinion though - both are well composed photographs, for different reasons.
I think his picture shows the entire of the insect excellently, showing all of its detail fantastically almost like a technical drawing,
but I think mine is a little more up close and personal, and what you can see of it can be seen in greater detail.
Each to their own I suppose
