Remember my Superstar Saga Koopa sprites ? Even if you don't, you've definitely seen them. There are edits upon edits floating around (dare I say a great many improperly credited oops).
Now... forget everything you know about those, and look at THESE. Inspired from the MLSS Hammer Bro and Koopa Troop design, they're what I believe Koopas would've looked like as enemies. You can see my reference comparison at the bottom right of the sheet.

Wings and spinning shell were taken from Troopea. Koopa Troop overworld was ripped from the game by A.J. Nitro then I heavily edited them. Every other pixel was made by me.

i remember when you first made the first koopa sheet i thought they were amazing. now when i look at them they do stand out, there's a level of detail on them that you don't see in any of the other mlss sprites

Like you said yourself, the older version may have looked more technically impressive to a lot of people. Hard to avoid seeing all the edits when you browse this site lol. But this one's far more accurate to the game it's styled after without really sacrificing anything notable, which makes it a winner in my book.
Most importantly, you made the crew Troopas look less like yellow hippos by removing the coat. Now that I actually typed it out, I cannot unsee the white collar as two massive buck teeth...

Exactly. When I was making this, it was originally more accurate to Koopas nowadays, but another friend gave me feedback that it literally wasn't ugly enough to fit the game. You can see the results.
Frogs, hippos... Something like that. Alphadream clearly had trouble with Koopa's sprites until BIS.

It's interesting that when M&L SS first came out, I preferredΒ the 'normal/modern' designs. But now that the remake is coming out, I really miss the style of the GBA game. Looks great man!
