Description
Download for the full resolution → →UPDATE 2:
Just realized you can pin stuff to change it's hue and saturation too, which is pretty cool! So I added a separate section explaining pinned layers to include that.
UPDATE:
- Changed the info on the Ctrl + Arrow key shortcut under Transform & Move, wich wasn't completely correct.
- Added a way to make big gradients (near the bottom)
- Added some info about resolution/dpi, which a lot of people have wrong (under the gradient tip)
- Also added SAI's logo at the top because it looks nice yey
This is getting so long oh god. I think I should split it into a few tutorials :')
As promised, here's my tutorial of SAI things! I know there're a lot of SAI tutorials out there already. But I noticed (specially with the shortcuts) that a lot of them are missing some stuff others have, so I decided to make one myself with everything I can think of so you can have it in only one tutorial instead of many. So if you know something useful that isn't here, please let me know so I can add it!
It's BIG and maybe I write a lot trying to explain things haha, but hope you can give it a look because I think some stuff here are really handy to know.
Btw, English is not my first language so sorry in advance if there're any grammar mistakes!
OTHER PEOPLE'S TUTORIALS TO COMPLEMENT
The Basics: Get to know the program interface and what tools do
Tool Settings: Explains everything you need to know about drawing tools' settings
Linework Layer / Vector: Useful tutorials to understand better how the Linework layers work and how to use them
Custom Brushes: SAI brushes aren't as fancy as Photoshop ones, but you can still customize them to an extent
And I guess that's everything! Hope you find this useful. More like, please find this useful so I didn't spend so many hours and energy writing this in vain lmao. Can I sleep now?
Other tutorials and step by steps I made:

I don't use Photoshop much myself, but from what I've used them, I can tell that Photoshop has a lot more filters, brushes and effects that SAI doesn't. However, I find SAI a lot more user friendly and easier to use. It also has the Stabilizer setting which can be very useful for lineart, and the Linework layers have a lot more funcionalities than PSvectors. Since PS has a lot more filters and such, unfortunately it makes it take a lot of time to load, and at least in my computer, it doesn't work as smoothly as SAI does.
So, which is better for you is something totally personal. If you don't care about all the filter and fancy effect PS has, I'd say SAI is better. But it also depends in how comfortable you find them. It's always nice to try both and decide which one you like better c:

It's surprising how many people still use sai despite how easily it crashes and how outdated it is.

rimuu In reply to Melancholypastels [2016-06-06 02:22:49 +0000 UTC]
Really? Because it works like a charm to me. The only times it crashed was because I was working with loads of layers in super big pictures, while having a lot of other programs windows open, on my okayish laptop, so it was more my fault haha.
I like using it since it has pretty much all I need, and it's super light compared to programs like Photoshop that take forever to load.

Did you try playing around with it on the program? Some things can be a bit hard to explain with words, but once you actually try them they're really easy to understand.
