UPDATE 2:
Just realized you can pin stuff to change it's hue and saturation too, which is pretty cool! So I added a separate section explaining pinned layers to include that.

UPDATE:
- Changed the info on the Ctrl + Arrow key shortcut under Transform & Move, wich wasn't completely correct.
- Added a way to make big gradients (near the bottom)
- Added some info about resolution/dpi, which a lot of people have wrong (under the gradient tip)
- Also added SAI's logo at the top because it looks nice yey

This is getting so long oh god. I think I should split it into a few tutorials :')

As promised, here's my tutorial of SAI things! I know there're a lot of SAI tutorials out there already. But I noticed (specially with the shortcuts) that a lot of them are missing some stuff others have, so I decided to make one myself with everything I can think of so you can have it in only one tutorial instead of many. So if you know something useful that isn't here, please let me know so I can add it!
It's BIG and maybe I write a lot trying to explain things haha, but hope you can give it a look because I think some stuff here are really handy to know.

Btw, English is not my first language so sorry in advance if there're any grammar mistakes!

OTHER PEOPLE'S TUTORIALS TO COMPLEMENT

The Basics: Get to know the program interface and what tools do

Tool Settings: Explains everything you need to know about drawing tools' settings

Linework Layer / Vector: Useful tutorials to understand better how the Linework layers work and how to use them

Custom Brushes: SAI brushes aren't as fancy as Photoshop ones, but you can still customize them to an extent

And I guess that's everything! Hope you find this useful. More like, please find this useful so I didn't spend so many hours and energy writing this in vain lmao. Can I sleep now?

This is super useful, I discovered so many new and useful things!! The fringe effect was a shock for me! Always wanted to know how to add borders to stuff without actually having to draw them! Also I never understood what selection source was for, so now that you explained I need to try it because I spend a lot of time painting the base colors manually.

I have a little question. I scan my stuff at 300dpi and then open it in SAI. I make new layers and work on top that, then delete the original scan. However only now I realized that SAI image size was at 72 dpi for my works. I assumed it would take the resolution from the scan. However, if I open it in photoshop the image resolution is 300 dpi. If I increase the resolution on SAI, then I can't extend the canvas too much, and starts to crash. So, I think the image size is big enough due to the original size of the scan, but if I were to print the work, it probably wouldn't look good, right?

I'm glad you learned a few things from this!!

mmm sadly my knowledge about dpi and how SAI works with it isn't much, so I'm not sure how to help you there ;v; Although if the image appears as 300 dpi when you open it with PS maybe it's something that SAI can't work with it? I'm not sure to be honest so maybe that's totally wrong.

heena02 In reply to rimuu [2016-03-09 23:17:27 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thank you so much for the reply!

Mmm, yeah it's kind of weird. I thought that if I created a layer over a scanned image at 300dpi, the whole SAI file would inherit that resolution, but I'm probably wrong. I thought that because PS always showed 300 dpi resolution in the image size, but I'll be more careful from now on.

Thanks for your time and for this wonderful tutorial! I'll be painting in SAI soon and I'll practice some of your tips!

aw muchas gracias!! Me alegra que te ayude.
La verdad hacerlo en ingles no fue difícil. Ya estoy tan acostumbrada que me cuesta lo mismo escribirlo en ingles o español jaja. Creo que hasta en español seria mas difícil porque SAI lo tengo en ingles y ni idea como se llaman las herramientas en español ;v;

Heartiful In reply to ??? [2016-03-06 20:46:50 +0000 UTC]

This is quite helpful! I do have a question however. What is the difference between clipping groups and locking opacity?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rimuu In reply to Heartiful [2016-03-06 20:54:36 +0000 UTC]

They essentially do the same thing, but the difference is that with locking opacity you'll only be able to work on that layer. With clipping groups however, you can make as many layers as you want that will keep the opacity of the base layer. You'll be able to edit them a lot easier this way. For example, if you have the base colors, shading and highlights on the same layer, you'll have to repaint a lot if you want to edit something. But if you have them in separated layers, let's say you don't like how the highlights turned out, you can simply erase that layer with a click and the base and shading layer won't be affected.

Hope that made sense! ;v;

Heartiful In reply to rimuu [2016-03-06 22:55:46 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh okay gotcha! Thanks so much! Clipping groups always seemed intimidating to me at first because I wasn't quite sure how to use them, but this guide of yours makes it a lot more simple!

NekoRinaArt [2016-03-06 20:39:55 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rimuu In reply to NekoRinaArt [2016-03-06 22:39:36 +0000 UTC]
