Description
A graphical mock-up of a (probably Linux, seeing as to how I used the GNOME Menu as the main menu here) operating system. Just a typical design, nothing really new. I've been dying to throw in a graphical mock-up of an interface and now here it is.I've uploaded the background separately as a wallpaper, too, right here:
Aquaburst Wallpaper
Download for higher-res.
Update August 26, 2008, 10 AM
Updated some of the colors and fixed up the weather widget drop shadow. Also, updated the shortcut bar at the lower-mid.

Hi artik1024,
Sorry for the really late reply. This is a desktop mock-up, not an actual functional desktop. But if you want to know, I used Myriad Pro (a Windows font) for all the text.
Thanks.

Ha ha, yeah. You're Malaysian, I presume? Nice to see another artist from M'sia. We're a rare species.

Mr friend, from both a human interface standpoint as well as a design standpoint, this design is exactly what the computer industry needs. With continued fostering and direction, this could seriously be a contender as far as UIs go. I would quit my job to see that happen, I am THAT sure of this fact. We should chat of this.

Thanks, I'm surprised you think so.
I actually would have tried to make this design a working operating system, but I lack the skills and resources to do so. I wouldn't mind if someone picks up this design and makes it a real, working, OS. In fact, I would be pleased.
But I think there are still other things that need to be improved and because of that, I'll continue to improve this design as well as its system concept.
I'm open for suggestions if there's anything you think needs improvement.

The first thing I would recommend is to stick with this design. Even though it may require small tweaks, it is fantastic as a first shot, most good ideas get overthought all to hell and become watered down. You hit the nail on the head.
Even with the right number of additional programs, this could at the very least, become a windows shell of sorts.

Actually, by improvements, I meant that I wouldn't really overwrite this original design, instead I'd make a separate alternative design so that others can compare the designs and hopefully provide feedback.
Anyway, Windows shell is okay, but the problem with that is that since Windows Shells serve as a replacement to the default Explorer, they tend to shut down partially, if not, entirely, the Explorer processes to free memory so that the shell replacement can be run. The problem with this is that, certain other programs need Explorer, and hence this causes other programs to not function properly, which of course causes users to be unhappy. But if this problem were to be dealt with without reducing performance whatsoever, then I'd say it's great.

There may in fact be ways to get such a UI running on Windows without a shell replacement. Perhaps through a combination of things. It would at the very least, be something worth looking into.

I will try to look into ways of making this interface functional when I have the time, whether on Windows or not. Once again, thanks for giving your suggestions and opinions, I greatly appreciate it.

Well, having access to the icons for the weather dock would be a good start. It would be one of the easier creations.

You mean the desktop widget? That's a good idea actually.
At this point, I still don't know if I should make it for Linux or Windows o.O.
Should I make the icons in scalable vector format? That would maximize quality but I don't think it's supported by Windows.

I would have to look into it. What I can say for sure though, is that if they are vector, they can be made into a Windows format quite easily.

You've got a point there, they can be converted to PNGs or whatever later on.
But, I can't get work started on it immediately; I have an exam which I have to focus on in November, so the Aquaburst stuff will have to wait till then; I have to make preparations for the exam.

Honestly I can't think of any, because it really looks professional. Hmm maybe more icons instead of words for the menu?
Learn up Flash, then you'll be able to really make an awesome mock-up - - clickable and everything. That'll be totally awesome, even if it's not a real OS interface.

Okay, I'll change the menu from plain text to have icons as well. Right now, I based it off the GNOME Menu, which has one icon (for the applications button) and the rest is text. It has the same items, too (apps, places, system).
Actually, I do know a thing or two about Flash, just not to the point of programming an interface. But yeah, I'll try one day.

Is it something one could download or just a preview? xD

Unfortunately, it's just a mock-up, meaning it's not actually functional or anything. Though, if someone would take it up, it could be turned into a functional piece of software, either as a full operating system or at least a theme for GNOME or something.
