Description

And the Hylian shield is ready for priming & painting! Surprisingly, the shield took less time than the Master Sword. It is roughly 23.5" x 19" and weighs a little over three pounds. It seems extremely durable. I used the following materials for this project:

Styrofoam (two layers power sanded to shape for the surface and border of the shield)

Thick corrugated cardboard (for creating the raised border and mid section on the back of the shield)

Very thin cardboard (the type that comes from cereal boxes and notebook backings; I used this to cover the border and edges to make them smooth and crisp and also to create the four "metal" raised designs on the shield surface)

PVC pipe with a very narrow diameter (I heated and bent this to shape for the handle of the shield)

Two large D-rings (used these for connecting the leather handle to the shield)

Leather strip (for the strap handle)

Buckle (to make the leather strap adjustable)

Wood filler (to fill in small holes in the styrofoam)

Worbla, about 1/2 of a Jumbo sheet (the entire shield is sandwiched with two large pieces and the fine details are sculpted from the scraps)

The shield took me about 15-20 hours to make.

Do you mean the strap and handle?Β  If that is the case, I poked holes through the Worbla and into the styrofoam for the handle, then heated the worbla and fused it in place.Β  The strap is connected to two large D-rings which are secured with strips of fabric inside the shield and are coverd by those two ornament pieces on either side of the strap.Β  Here is a collage of the major building steps; I think it will better illustrate what I did:Β  www.facebook.com/1412178079080…

The triforce, swirls, and bolts are all sculpted from Worbla scraps and fused on top of the shield.Β  However, the four curvy metal designs were made from pieces of thin cardboard that I carefully cut to shape and fitted together to make a three-dimensional object.Β  The process is rather hard to explain, but it's kind of like paper crafting without a pattern or guidelines.Β  They were hotglued to the surface of the shield before I put the Worbla over it.Β  I'll try to do a tutorial sometime for making cardboard structures, but it will require some time and thought to explain the process.Β  The process itself is not that hard.
