I actually saw this as the person actually... well, dead, so to speak, so... yeah, it feels like the person is dead and this is what happens after you are dead and all.
Then again, everything is made even more intriguing with the fact that it may not be dead at all... that this is actually happening, and I feel you have managed to convey the sinister effect of it all in an impactful way, especially with the diction used and all.

I can definitely see where you're coming from! Indeed, the narrator (me? not me? XD) is alive, put with the pain he/she is bearing they'd rather not be... I was attempting to convey the horrible circumstances the narrator is in when breathing itself becomes a vicious cycle... So I'm glad you picked up on that! :3
