So, I've always had this fanon of mine. Where luna came home perfectly fine. During her imprisonment she had managed to overcome nightmare moon and her jealousy. But when she returned home she saw Celestia prepare the moon for the summer sun celebration and realised that over the past 1000 years Celestia had been just fine without her.
Luna was obsolete, she wasn't really /needed/
Which, of course, made the anxiety and jealousy and shadow feelings come about.
Which is why she was nightmare moon in the first two episodes.
Also: The mare is still in the moon because idk. It'd give it away if it wasn't? Maybe it takes a while for the change to happen. IDK XD It was like that in the episodes so I kept it that way.
Excuse the darkness and over texturing...and the length. I had fun with this. It took me like..7 straight hours. So if its messy and what not I apologize.
...I also forgot Luna's eyeshadow xD ohwell.

I like the art but I hate when people make the nightmare something else it makes luna into a victim and weakens her as a character.

Its not so much that its something else. In my mind its kind of like depression for luna. Or almost split personality. I might not have explained it as well as I could have in this piece, but I did say "Which, of course, made the anxiety and jealousy and shadow feelings come about."
Personally I like both sides if done right :3

I felt it made more sense than being super angry for 1000 years xD unless luna was frozen up there I dont really see why she wouldnt overcome it on her own.

Luna remember this, even if she could raise the moon, she can never replicate the stars you've arranged so beautifully.

I never think of Luna as an obsolete character, I love her role as a Princess too much. She isn't evil, she was under appreciated and misunderstood. As a Princess of the Night, she can't enjoy the daytime like most ponies do due to her position, but it would be nice if they were grateful for the night as well. The little things like the beautiful, twinkling stars or the full ivory moon would like to feel appreciated. Luna works just as hard to make the night lovely like Celestia raises the Sun with no problem.

I think Luna should have taken the passive-agressive approach-- if no one appreciated her nights, she should have just quit raising the moon and stars until everyone tried to miss it. Because Luna has more control of the moon than Celestia does, Tia wouldn't be able to stop her.

I completely agree xD but I think the shadow whatever it is loves dramatics. (You see it in nightmare rarity too, and if you believe in the fanon in the "fall of the crystal empire" animation, so does sombra)
But either way, not raising the moon could be more effective than just...keepin it up there xD

Its a villain trope, always grandstand and monologue but just once I want a villain to actually do things right and just put the competition down right off the bat. I have a pistol in my room, we can do it together.

Truth be told, Discord kinda did that. He wasted no time weakening the Elements. However, if this was more mature, I think Sombra would have been that villain to actually kill somepony.

Sombra wanted slaves to his will, not dead ponys. He would have been the one to get assassinated by one of his slaves when his back was turned and he wasn't paying attention.

True. But if you really think about it, none of the villains seem to have a motive for killing anypony, well except for possibly Chrysalis if draining love was almost on the same level draining one's life force like a succubus.

The question becomes not his killing his subjects, though he probably did quite a bit in his rise to power. But the fact that his subjects were wiling to live on there knees than die on there feet.

I would like to see the villain win, but again that's just me. Like you said, there would be no more story, but I would love to see a villain succeed in a long run without performing the same cliche that leads to there downfall, i.e. monologues, too cocky, standing there waiting for the hero to fuck things up for them, etc.
