Description Sneak preview of a project I have underway...

I'm going all-out for accuracy and quality (and I mean all-out). Case in point - this book's a copy of the same 135-year-old book Cyan used. Yes, it's 135 years old and in that condition.

You have no idea how difficult they were to find.

EDIT: Project is complete! If you think just this looks amazing, check out what's inside .

This is supposed to be a replica of the book when it was "new", not old & worn - mainly because I managed to find a copy of the book in almost-new condition. Cyan's copy is completely worn down and the cover is falling apart (they actually don't have a spine on their book, even). The gold lines are still faintly there on Cyan's book, but you would only notice them if you looked really closely in person because they've mostly worn away.

As an in-character explanation, the original descriptive books were so valuable because destroying it would destroy all linking books to that age too, it makes sense that you would place the original books in places of protection (like they were on Myst Island). If they're being so well-protected all these years, then there's no reason they would have as much wear as the books did in the games. ...Or something.

I would love to get my hands on a Myst-book like this, though without the insane awesomeness within which I could never afford, sadly. ;v;'''
Did you custom order the book itself? Amazing job! QvQb

I loved the game, but there's a book? Is that actually a book named Myst or did you add the name to a really old book? & really? 130yrs old? That's amazing. What I wouldn't give to own something like that ^^

riumplus In reply to xXShadowKatXx [2012-07-11 03:42:27 +0000 UTC]

There are some books in the series (the Book of Atrus, the Book of Ti'ana & the Book of D'ni). When they were making the original Myst game, they scanned a random old book to use as a texture reference & added the word MYST to its cover with photo editing software. This is another copy of that book, in very good condition, with the word Myst embossed onto the cover. And that's not all it has..

so where do you think I could find a really awesome, & really old, book like that one? I really love old books, they have something about them that modern books don't ^^ also, do you know what the title of the original book they scanned was?

... sorry for all the questions

So what book is this actually made from? I need to start doing stuff like this and I need to post pictures of my study, it's very myst like (but with too much lighting)

Something on a related note for reproducing things.... Samsung has just come out with a paper-thin, and flexible LCD display. You could actually glue it to a page and have it animate the "fly-over" of Myst Island when someone opens the cover.

This is looking absolutely beautiful!

riumplus In reply to RoninOtter [2011-12-31 02:21:06 +0000 UTC]

As far as I'm aware, flexible full-colour displays have never been offered for sale to the public by any company. If you know where I can buy one send me a link, I'd LOVE to get my hands on one! (Not for this project though; I'm doing something else with these books hehe)

In a couple of years I suspect that the flexible screens will be mass produced and available on the market if all goes well in the industry. There have been many tech demos of the screens in Japan and with many types you can roll them up easily and even "smash" them with a hammer with little to no damage done. There are a ton of videos on Youtube. I too haven't seen any for sale. With the way technology is progressing it shouldn't be much longer for you to put one in your Myst book for cheap. I'd have a nerdgasm over seeing an HD flexible screen in an old book playing the linking movies.

Where do you find a 130-year-old book with no writing on it already, so that you can add your own?

riumplus In reply to raeth [2011-07-31 08:28:37 +0000 UTC]

I've no idea, perhaps an old book store or online somewhere. These books were actual books with printed content

As a bibliophile, MYST fan, and artisan printer by trade... I can honestly say that seeing this was orgasmic XD

If you do eventually create several or more to sell, please let me know. I spend more than is healthy on antiquarian and unique hand-made books, and this definitely takes the cake, haha.

riumplus In reply to mocha-san [2010-12-21 09:57:09 +0000 UTC]

I actually have some spare "supplies" left over, for repairs in case I screw up anywhere. I may offer them for sale once I'm done.

But, uhm... these pieces are expensive, just fyi. I didn't skimp on quality but that means the price goes through the roof. c.c

Sorry it took me awhile to reply.

Depending on what the actually text in the book is, I'd be willing to pay quite a bite of money for one.

Fantastic job! I wanted to do this once and have the inner page use a small touchscreen with a tiny computer to play the linking book movies from all the games, and whenever you touched it the linking sound would play and a new movie would appear.

Cool idea, but building a computer that small would be hard!

LostThyme [2010-11-15 23:47:12 +0000 UTC]

This is amazing! Do you plan on putting in some sort of picture for the linking panel?

Just curious, but what was the book before it got the Myst treatment?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

riumplus In reply to LostThyme [2010-11-16 13:03:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! There'll be something in there... The contents are a secret though. I'm constantly changing what will be inside and it's not even finished yet, so I don't want to say in case my plans change.

And as I said to other people, sorry but I'd rather not say the book's identity just yet... I've spent I think seven years searching and obtaining every copy of the book that I could find, hunting more places than you'd think. I'd like to keep it secret until I'm done so I don't end up fighting other fans.

This was hand-made, not bought I doubt I'll ever put it up for sale, but if I did the price would have to be pretty high (higher than most people would be likely to pay).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jvrichardson In reply to riumplus [2010-11-16 21:21:47 +0000 UTC]

If the pages inside were as aged and authentic looking as the cover is, and contained say... The books of Ti'Ana, Atrus, and D'ni, I can think of two people who would be willing to pay quite a bit.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jvrichardson In reply to jvrichardson [2010-11-16 23:32:17 +0000 UTC]

Actually, you should name the price you would require were you to make a second cover with no pages in it. If there is a price that can be had, note me with it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

riumplus In reply to jvrichardson [2010-11-18 13:09:09 +0000 UTC]

It's not just the price for the time involved, it's also the fact that these books are very hard to come by. Though again, the time, materials and workmanship are probably more than you'd think. That's 24-carat gold on there, not standard foil. c.c
