Description
copy-pasted text from my tumblr:
Bagan, an unused Toho monster considered multiple times for films that were never made. Originally created as a co-star for a Godzilla film in 1980, Bagan went on to be the antagonist of an unmade Mothra movie, and then another Godzilla film around 1995. Bagan’s only official appearance was in the 1993 video game “Super Godzilla” as the final boss.
How would Bagan fit into the Godzilla series? All of Godzilla’s enemies in the Heisei era were reflections of Godzilla. Biollante is a copy of Godzilla created with genetic engineering, which was comparable to nuclear energy and atomic weapons as an emerging hot topic. King Ghidorah was an attempt to re-create and replace Godzilla, but in artificial, controlled circumstances. Mothra and Battra are both opposite sides of the scale with Godzilla in the middle, in terms of relationships to the earth and civilization. Mechagodzilla is an idealized Godzilla. SpaceGodzilla is an imperfect, deranged Godzilla. And Destroyah is Godzilla’s Godzilla, which I’ve talked about before .
Bagan’s only real origin is that its a Chinese forest deity. Not sure if that held over to 1995, but the idea of Bagan being a corrupted nature god is an interesting contrast to Godzilla being a mutated life-form.
Also, there’s a lot of concept art for Bagan, beginning with the original transforming mythical creature in 1980. The idea was that it would shape-shift between a fish beast (named Mizu Reijuu), an ape beast (Enjin Reijuu), and a flying beast (Doragon Reijuu). After a few tussles with Godzilla, it would transform into it’s final form which was all the beasts combined into final towering form with three faces shortly before being destroyed by Godzilla.
Bagan had a tumultuous conceptual history, with many designs left on the cutting room floor. An idea I really like is that they’re all various forms Bagan took after its destruction, always to return with a new body, culminating with its grey, three horned form (pictured at bottom right).

These are pretty cool, as much as I’m irritated by how obscenely overrated this guy is. Like I’m sorry people, but you can’t convince me that a monster who never appeared in a film is Godzilla’s strongest enemy and the be-all end-all final boss of the franchise.

And then the early G fandom got a hold of him (TK and Kaijuphile especially) and he turned into overrated FinalBossmons

The hunchback one looks like the monster in the Ultraman USA animated movie. You know, the 3 Ultramans that is powered by sunlight

Technically all of the Ultras are more or less powered by sunlight. That’s why they have the time limits. Earth’s atmosphere inhibits their ability to take in solar energy.

I think I liked this idea of corrupted nature god, if there will be a new continuous series he should be included and fight godzilla, maybe even be a good idea to flesh out character...
Im gonna give it a go...

But what if someday Bagan will have his chance for his appearance in my fanfic NapoleonicWorld, the Westworld of Napoleonic Wars as a villain or a good guy depend upon his actions, and interaction with Kaiju-size Hosts?

Toho really needs to put Bagan in a Godzilla film. They planned so many films with him in them, but his only major appearance was Super Godzilla for the SNES.

Bagan was actually created not to be a reflection of Godzilla... but a reflection of Mothra! In one of the Japanese books, it specifically notes that Mothra is the "ancient guardian angel" while Bagan is the "god of darkness". Seeing as how he was intended to fight her, it makes sense! Though I'm sure they would've made some tweaks to his origins if he'd been made to fight Godzilla specifically.
Awesome renditions of his various concepts

Thank you!
That's interesting info. I can see Bagan definitely fitting in with whatever mythology Mothra is part of.
This must have been the line of conceptual thinking that eventually lead to the creation of Battra.

Correct The "Battle for Earth" movie in general was greatly influenced by the lost "Mothra vs. Bagan" concept, even giving Battra the personality/motivations of Bagan (albeit making him more sympathetic). There's so much info floating around for the three-horned guy, the Japanese have all the fun learning about it!

Those are some pretty awesome design, even if I think Bagan is a bit overrated in the kaiju community. With that said, I like seeing his various designs, especially the Totem design.

Yeah, I can't say I'm a big fan of Bagan being the "ultimate evil super-beast". Though I will admit, I've seen it implemented pretty well a few times.

Really, Destroyorah took his design, and some of the concepts, for the kaiju (especially the shape-shifting thing). Someone did make a life-force-sucking vampire design/concept as a replacement for Desghidorah, which I think was awesome.

I made it shorter than the concept art version and also made it forked, to see how it would look

Very awesome. Bagan certainly does have the greatest number of different designs on the scrapping board, that is for sure. Strangely enough I liked the hunchbacked silver one as the best. Even more so than the more traditional designs from the Super Godzilla video game.
Though I will admit...the Totem version would have been pretty badass. Too bad that "totem" monster look as been played out because of some the "hydra" like big bad monsters that have been in the recent Ultra movies and shows.

I think that hunchbacked one was the final design made in 1990, because it appears in the storyboards for 'Mothra vs. Bagan'. It's a pretty solid design.
Also, the Ultraman series has basically done everything. It's like that 'Simpson's Did It' joke. Any monster design you can think of, Ultraman has probably fought it.

Man, I remember that game back in 95; Bagan was tough as hell and I got a hand cramp on the attempt where I finally beat him. I recognize that version in the lower right hand corner there.
That's quite a history lesson; where did you find out about this neglected antagonist?

Bagan is probably the most well documented unused monster Toho has made, to the point where it's almost the mascot for old and lost concepts in the Godzilla series.
This site has the info that inspired me to make that "Ape Lizard" drawing in '06, while this other site site has a lot of the concept art.

That's the saddest mascot I've ever heard of; this fellow needs at least a cameo in one of the feature films, like that long, Chinese dragon sort of monster only seen in a two second clip (you seem like the type of dude who will know what I'm talking about).
Great job on the multiple renditions, btw. This is the sort of quality that could be published in official series art.

Thank you very much!
Frankly I'm not sure what Bagan's 'status' is behind the scenes. Maybe it never appears, even as a cameo, because it's considered "old paradigm" or something like that.
Though it would be pretty funny if it had a quick prominent cameo and then never gets mentioned again or influences the film at all.
