Description
As I said in my last two journals, my schedule's become much more hectic than it has been. As a result, I have to be a lot more selective of my creative pursuits on here if I want to maintain a presence here. This site is important to me and I want to stay with you guys rather than slip completely into the real world and never check in.The problem with being selective is this: I have a LOT of monster designs in my head. So many to choose from, and going in chronological order is slow and steady but at times boring. Then the other day the answer hit me while I was watching a special on DVD about the Justice League. One of the guys talking said that the appeal of those teamup comics was that people could see more in one place than otherwise. The lightbulb went off there. I needed to show multiple monsters at once more often!
So I've whipped this thing up in the past week when I've had free time. These are a few of the monsters you will find in the Monsterman story splashed together, to scale no less! I drew them at a smaller, more manageable size and colored them in a less complex manner than I usually do, if you were wondering why the style might look a little different. Oh, and they come with descriptions too: Left to Right of course.
Top Row:
-Monsterman is Monsterman is Monsterman. It was fun drawing him again at a smaller size. His plain design is growing on me, though he has quite a few other looks to be shown in future things like this. But I'm afraid I've said too much on that already.
-Idelf at a proper size. Nothing new there.
-A typical Monger footsoldier. Most of their monsters come from their energy and they serve as footsoldiers, easy enemies. Thumb-thumbs, if you will.
-The first monster faced by Monsterman, Verminator. He is based around fear of 'gross' animals, so I slapped together a chimera of rat, crow and cockroach and set it loose. As long as a piece of him remains, he can regrow, so he has to be obliterated by Monsterman's most powerful attack. (Fun Fact: Verminator will be in Dark Hours, too, but in a bit of a different way. How? Well, you'll see.
-Bezoara is a shambling Monger blob made of organic waste in a sewer. Hair, poo, and other unspeakable things, to be exact. Like Verminator he's more gross than scary and is difficult to kill. He can split his body in innumerable ways.
-Hexhem is the first non-monger enemy of Monsterman in the story. He is a planes-walking energy eater that was trapped ages ago by ancestors of the main character's best friend. He is based on the old fear of seeing a sweater arm in your closet move at night because of the A/C and mistaking it for a monster. But the scariest part is he looks like a fugly sweater. He desires Monsterman's life force and is a crafty, recurring enemy. You have to have enemies from more than one source if you want a series to work after all.
-Unth and Lica are two members of the Monger Warrior caste, and they serve as a pair of recurring enemies for Monsterman, usually sent to hold him off to cover a retreat. They are tough but slip into Team Rocket style shenanigans time and again. They are zealously loyal to the usurper Monger leader Thanz and will do anything he asks.
-Orbros is probably one of the more unusual ideas I've had in some time. He is based around Mark Martin's fear of Phys. Ed as a kid, and resembles, you guessed it, a ball. But the story behind this monster is mysterious and plot-centric and secretish. Let's just say this: Orbros is a being contained within a spherical energy prison of alien design left at the bottom of the ocean. His powers revolve around kinetic energy, and he is an occasional ally of Monsterman.
-Cornroller isn't the most intimidating monster in existence, but he is in the story regardless. He is based on a fear of eating vegetables, and actually is pretty dangerous. He can launch kernels out like massive bullets that can topple buildings, and his finisher involves him taking root and growing into a gigantic cornier version of the whomping willow. Monger-made, of course. no he isn't a reject for the florious five I wanted to keep what are you talking about?
-Takraw is a fear of eating spoiled food, a massive putrid crayfish monster, again monger-made, with some deadly weaponry. It can shoot out vents of toxic steam. It and Cornroller attack a county fair.
-Maschroid is one of the few machines you'll see in Monsterman, and is an ally turned enemy. Created by a man named Dr. Axel Rammstein, considered the houdini of robotics, he challenges the validity of Monsterman's existence on TV and challenges him to a fight with this bad boy, though in his first incarnation he just looks like a souped up monster truck. He slowly evolves over time as Dr. Rammstein steals Monger Technology into this guy. This isn't his only look either, he's actually a transforming robot a couple different forms besides this one. Based on a fear of loud places like monster truck rallies. One of my zanier concepts to be sure.
-The last and certainly not least of these is Shrot, a hellhound monster from a dimension alongside this one. He is based on a monster concept from the first incarnation of Dark Hours that no longer fits in the main story, and when I started putting this story together, he fit right in. His design is largely just out of my own imagination, though the red markings were to evoke amaterasu imagery, even though he is a twisted creature he is still supernatural and an homage, albeit a twisted bloody one, was needed. He is the first monster Monsterman is unable to defeat, though exactly how he's beaten is something I won't reveal because spoilers.
There you have it, two rows of Monsterman monsters. Enjoy, comment and question, everyone! If you have any design tips or ideas, I'm welcome to them.
There will probably be another two or so of these for all the Monsterman kaiju, and depending on how big a hit they are I may just start doing this for Dark Hours and other works as well when I'm pressed on time. Until then, though, Crim out.
