Description
9/1/08 - Route 66 KansasOnly 12.8 miles of Route 66 cut through the southeastern corner of Kansas. Although short in miles, the "Sunflower State" packs more of the Route 66 experience in its dozen miles than any of the other states. Route 66 in Kansas has the distinction of being completely paved by 1929 making it the first state to pave all of Route 66, however, it is the only Route 66 state to be completely bypassed by the Interstate that replaced it.

I am surprised by the interest this invokes from folks that are outside of the US! While I was exploring, I saw 2 motorcycle clubs from Norway touring the route. I believe that they flew into Los Angeles and rented bikes to ride the full length to Chicago. And I thought that this was only an American pop culture thing, how naive!

route 66 is a mistery around the world... you know those disapperances etc... not to speak about those grizzly movies they make with route 66 as a setting... for me, route 66 is a symbol of freedom... just that

Yes, definitely a symbol of freedom! Not too many drive anymore since air travel is quicker. With what's going on with gas/feul/petrol, most are staying put these days!
