This model of the Cunard Line's first ocean liner, the 1154-ton paddle steamer RMS Britannia, is displayed at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in her old home port of Liverpool. She was a fast ship, sailing from Liverpool to Halifax in twelve and a half days on her July 1840 maiden voyage and going back home in under ten days, but the transatlantic fare was 35 guineas, or almost 3000 modern British pounds, and Charles Darwin got seasick aboard her while sailing to America with his wife. I want to take a moment and thank you for your posting all these photos of 19th century steamships. A subject that is rather poorly covered I have discovered. Your photos have provided me with lots of study material for my own illustration work.
