Description
This is how London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Webb improved Precedent-class 2-4-0 steam locomotive No. 790 Hardwicke looks in profile. The 36-ton locomotive was built by Crewe Works in 1873 as an express-passenger engine, and was "renewed" in 1892, after which it was assigned to the Crewe-Carlisle section of the West Coast Main Line. During the 1895 Race to the North, it maintained a speed of over 67 miles per hour on the London-Glasgow train. It was retired by the LMS Railway in 1932 and donated to the National Railway Museum in 1975, by which time it was already over a century old. On display at the Locomotion Museum in Shildon, Hardwicke looks fast and elegant with its proportionally large 6'9" driving wheels and lined "blackberry black" livery, though a bit spindly compared to more recent locomotives.Related content

Cracking loco with an interesting history. Shame it is now classed as one that will never run again. I detest museums in many ways at times.... Well the people running them I should say

What a pretty and yet odd looking locomotive! The drivers make me laugh!

Thanks! It's actually four colors, not counting the brass nameplate or the LNWR crest.
