I think that car was Luigi's inspiration from Pixar's Cars.

Every character in the Cars trilogy is inspired by a real life vehicle (and often a specific IRL person too). For example, Strip "The King" Weathers is based on and voiced by Richard Petty (and represented by the Plymouth Superbird he drove in the Cup one year).
