Description All three of these locomotives are members of the elite club of steam locomotives that are recognized as having exceeded 100 miles per hour.  At the National Railway Museum (York, England), LNER Gresley A4 Pacific (4-6-2) locomotive No. 4468 Mallard, which achieved the steam speed record of 126 miles per hour 77 years ago, seems to be discussing with No. 4489 Dominion of Canada how well they would fare against Great Western Railway (GWR) 4-4-0 No. 3440/3717 City of Truro in a race.  City of Truro is generally recognized as the first locomotive to exceed 100 miles per hour, which it surpassed in May 1904 on the Plymouth-London Paddington run of the Ocean Mails special, but its speed record was never fully substantiated.  Mallard's record-breaking run was measured with an LNER dynamometer car, which is also preserved at the NRM.  Dominion of Canada, which is back on display at Exporail in Montreal, never set any speed records, but it did come close to doing 110 miles per hour on Stoke Bank in 1937.  While I will miss Dominion of Canada next time I visit the NRM, I will see City of Truro and Mallard again this August.
