Prince Æclypse was born in the northern Kingdom of Thule over a thousand years prior to Twilight Sparkle arriving in Ponyville. He was a precocious foal who grew into a talented young stallion. He studied history, philosophy, poetry, and warfare. As a prince, he was entitled to a life of leisure and wealth, but a mindset of integrity and duty to his folk led him to spend years as a member of the Thulian Guard.
Honing his skills as a warrior and strategist, he gained respect from the rank and file by enduring the same hardships they endured, and mastering the same combat abilities they did. Though he was more disposed towards learning and art, his merit and dedication made him beloved among the warriors and populace alike. While a successful leader, his greatest feat came when he risked his life to protect dozens of ponies from the wrath of the dreaded Fyre Drake, and defeated the beast in single combat.
At the time of his coming of age, he was relieved of his military service by his father the King, and made Principate of the Kingdom, a role that serves to prepare one to become the next king. With great fame and deed to his name, and renowned for his virtue, many a pony in Thule rejoiced for the coming reign of King Æclypse the Valiant.

But his brother was not so loved. Unlike Æclypse, ßombra was not disposed towards things honest and virtuous. Instead he sought power in all its forms, most importantly, magic. While exploring the deep and mysterious caverns in the Misty Mountains wherein Thule rested, he discovered the power of dark crystals, and the incredible power they gave him.

Sombra's only friend was his elder brother, and Æclypse would often defend him from those who warned of the evil soul growing within the younger prince. When Æclypse was made Principate, the right fell to him to name a Principate of the Guard, and so he appointed Sombra, to the dismay and fear of many. Æclypse dismissed their worries, telling them that Sombra was more apt for the job than many. Indeed, Sombra's aptitude for guile, sabotage, and exploitation made him a terror to the Kingdom's foes, and under his watch, Thule was well protected.

But Sombra desired to match his brother's greatness, and so designed a plot to overthrow and annex the neighboring kingdom, the Crystal Empire. He invited his brother to join him, but Æclypse refused, and warned Sombra against this mad venture. But the younger prince was wrothful, and stormed out of Thule amidst a tempest of darkness, never to return.

Sombra overcame the Empire's magical defenses, and conquered it, deposing of the radiant Crystal Queen Amore in the process. The Alicorn sisters were swiftly alerted, and Celestia and Luna ventured forth to put an end to the evil unicorn. Celestia went to Thule to obtain the aid of Prince Æclypse, but the brother refused. It was the lore of Thule's gods that for blood to raise arms against blood kin was to invite doom and catastrophe, and Thulian ponies believed in their gods word. Celestia and Æclypse became bitter to one another, and despite Celestia's pleas and threats, he would not be coerced.

So Celestia and Luna defeated the self-proclaimed King Sombra, and banished him to a prison of eternal ice and cold. Celestia returned to Thule, and exiled Æclypse from Equestria for his refusal to do the right thing, dubbing him Æclypse the Unforgiven.

With the royal house dismantled, and a kingdom devastated, ponies submitted themselves to Equestrian rule and migrated into the southlands, dispersing far and wide. Thule fell into legend and was forgotten, consumed by the snow and buried.

But what only a secret few knew, was that Æclypse and Luna had been having an affair in the dreamscape, a relationship which Celestia opposed. And it was this clandestine love that played no small part in the hostility between the Princess of the Dawn, and the Valiant Prince of the North.
