Description
A pair of lizards duke it out on a path just in from the coast of California. Probably some species of Sceloporus, although I'm terrible with lizards.Pretty fun to watch. Lots of pushups, circling around each other, getting close and then backing off. Only had one real skirmish, mostly because some stupid jogger came barreling through the wall of people surrounding the lizards without missing a step and almost crushed them under foot. Couldn't even believe it. Absolute dismay.Related content

Eesh, some people just can't appreciate the spectacles of nature...

Sadly true. Which is weird given how far they would have had to drive to go out and run *in* nature at that place.

Yup, a few other folks have suggested that's the species as well, so I supsect that's what they are. They definitely are aggressive when it comes to territory disputes. I just wish I'd gotten their faces in this shot. Thanks for the comment and the ID.

How could anyone miss an amazing lizard battle going on underfoot?? That's just a reminder of why photographers are important - they have the presence of mind - and the artistry - to highlight moments that others might miss.

I don't know. I just don't know. I could understand not seeing the lizard if you were just out running and off in your own little world, but when you have to navigate around a group of people stopped in the middle of a path, one of whom is a photographer with an enormous lens obviously looking at something in the road? Not so much. People, I tell you.

One day in the middle of Summer I found something similar, but with iberian wall lizards. There were like three of them fighting and biting each other. I think the hot weather turns them crazy....

I think you're probably right. It was just starting to warm up when I was visiting California. More heat means more activity, and more activity means fighting to defend territories from other males.
