Description
A hyena shows off some of the world's most powerful jaws to an unimpressed friend. Interesting side note: Hyenas' closest relatives are feline, not canine. Go figure.Related content

good picture but hyenas closest relatives are mustelids (meerkats, mongoose), not felines.

Yes yes, it's amazing what I've learned in four years. I suspect that I misspoke rather than being misinformed when I wrote this. Seems like I meant to say they're *more related* to felines than they are other canines, but alas, that is not what the words say. Thank you for the correction.

Thanks. Yawn shots are always pretty cool, but for whatever reason I've always had trouble getting them just right. Glad you like this one.

Awe.
I think he/she has lovely jaws
I love their big strong necks, just want to throw my arms around them!
The sleeping one is adorable, reminds me of my dog.
Anyone hazard a guess at why I want to work with these guys.
They make me laugh!
Actually they are closer to mongooses and meerkats (the family herpistidae) which is close to viverids (civets, genets and lingsangs)

Well, I wouldn't know either way abotu their relation to civets and mongooses. All I know is that I heard they're more related to the enemies, the lions, than they are to other canines. I don't I'd mind working with hyenas either. They're not my all time favorite animals, but I still do like them quite a bit.
Glad you like the shot.

HEXES! Finally! There's somebody here who freaking knows that hyenas are more closely related to felines! Yes, they are canine and feline, but most definitely more feline. Nice shot too. It shows fierceness well.

lol Thanks. I just remember it as being some random trivia that I got from somewhere like National Geographic or something like that which has just stuck with me over the years.
Yay for random knowledge.

Heheh. I got it from a Zoobook on wild dogs. It showed African Wild dogs or summat protecting their young from a hyena. The little bold print said "Hyenas are NOT dogs, as many people think." After that, I thought, "Then what are they...marine mammals?"

That is a nice photo You're good at catching these at the right time. I think hyenas are beautiful, even if Disney doesn't.

Thanks for the nice words. I think that one of the reasons my pictures are so good (boy am I humble
) is that I do whatever it takes to make them come out as you described. Whenever I go out on a photo trip, I usually spend much much more time waiting in a spot for a picture to present itself than I do actually taking pictures. Sometimes it gets boring after the first twenty minutes of watching an animal sleep, but I know that I will be there and will be ready when the animal wakes up and strikes that perfect pose for a split-second. That is what has happened with some of what I consider to be my best pictures (Baby Face Leopard, Leopard in Profile, Eye on You, etc.).
I read somewhere that the biggest and toughest part of my field of photography is patience, and I think that it makes my pictures substantially better.

I think you hit the nail on the head, I recently went to the Zoo and had a hell of a time keeping my boyfriend in one place while I waited for a good photo opp, maybe you could teach him a thing or two? heh.

Great pic, i had a couple of encounters with wild heyna's and they sure are a pest!
One actually stole one of our pots and was able to seriously dent the thing, before we got it back. XD

Thanks. They can be pretty annoying, but I guess they're not bad. From all the time I've been spending around them recently (unfortunately in the zoo, not in the wild), I am actually coming to like them. For the most part they aren't as ugly and evil as people seem to think they are. I'm sorry about your pot though.

Thank you. I started off disliking hyenas, but the more I see them and photograph them, the more I get to liking them. I currently have a small obsession with them.

The alpha female and over all structure is really amazing - they are nothing like the stupid villans Disney set them up as
