Description Well, 3/4 profile anyways. I like this picture simply because he only stood like this for a split second (he was pacing constantly for the entire time I was there), and I just happened to be prepared for him to do so. For one time that day, my waiting actually paid off.

Wow... He really is gorgeous. He looks confused and kind of irritated here!

Lovely shot I know how hard it is to take a photo of a pacing tiger so well done!
The zoo you go to seems to be very photographer friendly. Is there lots of windows in the enclosures or are you just managing to zoom between the bars?

This zoo (Houston Zoo) attempted to be photographer friendly, but a lot of the glass was way too fogged to take decent pictures through (check my scraps for a couple such cougar shots). This picture was taken out over an open area (no glass or bars separating us. I was up on a higher level, and there was a little moat of sorts down below. The San ANtonio Zoo (my usual zoo) is much better in terms of being photographer friendly. Lot's of [clean] glass, not too many heavily barred cages (not too awful many cages period). So yeah, I'd take the San Antonio Zoo in a heartbbeat.

You're lucky! Whipsnade Wild Animal Park (Where I work over the holidays) is really difficult to take photos in, loads of bars and wire, what little glass they have is normally covered in muddy paw prints! Marwell zoo (the zoo closest to me while I'm at uni) is much better, they have a great Amur leopard enclosure and Snow leopard enclosure with a fair amount of glass which is normally pretty clean. I think you have the better end of the deal though!

I'd love to find an Amur leopard to photograph. They advertised themselves as having one at the Houston Zoo, but I didn't see it if it was there. Saw a black leopard, so that was kinda the same i guess... But the fencing was too thick to shoot through.Maybe the SA Zoo has the upper hand in this case, but some of the best zoos in the world are in Europe. Overall, I think you have the deal, at least if you're willing to travel that is...

The Amur leopards at Marwell have just had a cub I've not had the chance to photograph her yet, but hopefully I'll be going back up there soon so fingers crossed. I wish I could afford to travel around the zoos throughout Europe! I think I've been to most of the zoos and wildlife parks in Southern England, but there are so many more that I want to visit. I'm just never satisfied!

The Netherlands seems like a hotspot for great zoos. Just look at most of the best wildlife photographers on dA: b-f-g, guitarjohnny, henrieke, havoc-elite, etc are all fromt he netherlands. If I come to Europe, that's where I'm going. BTW, I like your new avatar. Looks good.

Thanks! I'll have to go to the Netherlands someday. I'm going to Australia this summer so I have no money to travel anywhere else! Hopefully there are some good zoos over there!
