Description
An African Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. This guy developed glaucoma in both of his eyes some time back and unfortunately ended up losing them as a result. He does just fine on his own though -- he lives with family members who help him out getting around his enclosure, getting him fed, etc., so he is not at all suffering or in poor shape living life without sight.

Cheetah conservation is something that Fossil Rim is very heavily invested in. They currently house more than 25 cheetahs, and as of our visit in October, a new litter had just recently been born. We're getting to a point now where every cheetah is precious, with or without eyes, because wild populations are in a death spiral, and captive populations are stuggling to remain self-sustaining. Less than 10,000 individuals remain in the wild, and continued poaching, predation, and eradication as pest animals are further depressing their numbers.
