Description A chance encounter with a big ol' White-lined sphinx (thanks to for identification correction!) Β feeding on some flowers on Canyon Road in Santa Fe last month. Pain in the butt to try to shoot, but I'm pretty happy with theΒ results.

Awesome. Β It almost looks like a Jim Henson creation.

It definitely looks plush and fuzzy, so it's got the Jim Henson basics down pat.

Thanks. It's funny, I had a macro lens with me for part of this trip, but I found that I'm really not great with it, so my best macro work was actually with my 300mm telephoto lens. I guess you take what you know and make it work sometimes.

Thank you. I did my best to get the action completely stopped, but it was just a little too dark so I could only do so much. Glad you like it!

You find just the coolest critters!
I really want to see one of these guys!
I think I may have lost my chance, not sure how much longer the flowers are going to be around where these guys are.Β

As I told another commenter, I'm turbl with insects, so I couldn't even begin to tell you where to look. You know, except for Canyon Road in Santa Fe. Definitely a neat little surprise to find though. There were actually two of them there for a bit, but the chances of me getting them both in a shot and in focus was juuuuust less than absolute zero.

I know little to nothing about insects either. And my entomologist buddy went back to live over in Delaware. I have no idea why. Something about a PhD and a girlfriend Β
I think there might be some on Montana. I have no idea if August is too late to go looking for them or not. But wildflower season seems to be at the same time as peak tourist season so ughhh.Β

I see them every now and again, but they're rare enough that I would be hard-pressed to tell you where. It makes it a fun surprise whenever I do see them though.

Ah, thanks for the correction. I'm no good with insects, moth or otherwise. I'll correct it now.
