Description
I'm REALLY proud to be working on this project from Cryptozoic Entertainment and Penny Arcade. Shown here is my cover to issue one. On this cover I got to do my own inks and colors too, which is super fun. My overall job on the ongoing series is pencilling as well as some of the color details and illustrative design elements throughout the book. What an AMAZING team to be working with. Written by the uber-talented Ben McCool. Inked by the wonderfully gifted Mike Norton. Colored by the magician that is Rainer Petter. All under the awesome leadership of editor Cory Jones. The overall book is assembled and craftfully designed by Larry Renac.
But it all was started by it's genius creators, Penny Arcades' Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik. For a long time I studied Mike's unique and beautiful art style. Trying to come up with pencils and designs to do it justice. That guy is insanely talented, so this has been a bit intimidating for me, to say the least.
It has been a great learning experience and a blast to work on. The first issue is finally out via ComiXology.
Get it here, folks!

The Lookouts #1 will also be previewed at San Diego Comic-Con with TWO exclusive covers, one by Mike Krahulik and one by Doug TenNapel! WOW!!! This will from 8-11 PM at the Cryptozoic store.
Printed copies of the First Issue will launch in comic stores nationwide on August 29, 2012.
More to come!!!!

Oh, I am going to study this for certain. I love all the environmental details, especially that critter spiraling up the tree. How much of the background (trees, branches, logs, etc.) do you actually sketch-out in the initial drawing, and how much do you add as you go?
I also really like how you used the colors. The main figures really stand out with the yellow influence, but still tie in with the background, too. This is a most awesome illustration; I think I have much to learn from it! ^_^

In this case he was drawn in first I think, but the creature's look developed in tighter drawings. for the overall series i've actually been adding more creatures to certain scenes. the weirder looking the better!
Thanks so much for your supportive words and for noticing those little things. Very kind of you!

No problem, thanks for responding! I make mental notes of all kinds of details for myself, but I find a lot of artists appreciate when I share my observations. I don't usually have time to write everything up, though, else it would be a wall-o-text.
On another note, I also really like how the lighting on the foreground elements (rocks, mushrooms in the lower left) focus the viewer on the main figures. As if secretly implying that they glow with pure awesome! But without, you know, actually glowing. Very sneaky; I almost didn't notice. Almost.

I learned a lot from following the colorist on the book Rainer Petter! He is really talented.
thanks for noticing all those details.

Gosh, you're right. I really like his approach to lighting! Adds a lot of life to his works. I shall have to take notes on his stuff as well, now. ^_^ Thanks for sharing!
