Description
This is the cover and back cover to my daughter's birthday party invitation. We are only inviting immediate and extended family so I feel bad that I'm only sending a few of these out in the mail.I wanted to recapture the grungier Sesame Street from my childhood days. The Sesame Street books back in the 70's were illustrated with such a unique group of artists. I still have all of mine!
Now Elmo and Zoe rule all with their neon poppy colors and mass produced clip art illustrations...DAMN YOU ELMO...DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!!
I miss all the un-PC characters like Roosevelt Franklin, The Two-headed Monster, Frazzle, Herry Monster, Bruno the Construction Worker, Guy Smiley, Sherlock Hemlock, The sleazy street vendor guy, and that crazed piano player that used to smash his head on the keyboard.

Very classical look to it, Elmo may be more relatable for kids these days and took the spotlight, but the old monsters like cookie monster and big bird will always have a place in my heart...

Aw! That's pretty cute! Your daughter is very lucky to have such a talented father!
And I miss Sesame Street the way it used to be! It's not at all the same as how it was when I was younger.... It peeved me when they tried to change Cookie-Monster into the Veggie-Monster!!

Ah the memories. I remember the days of "Monster Piece Theatre" hosted By good 'ol Alister Cookie. Those were the days, when Jim Hensen was still alive and had a hand in Sesame Street.

I don't remember there too politically incorrect with characters like Two-Head, Guy Smiley, Biff & Sully, or Sherlock Hemlock. But yeah, the Street has cleaned itself up quite a lot compared to itself in the 70's. I mostly blame competitors like Barney, they caught the Muppets with their pants down in the 90's(at least the Muppets who wore pants), especially without Jim Henson to guide them!

I am a huge fan of the grittier look of the vintage Sesame Street books. Roosevelt Franklin needs to come back! He was a street poet and rapper years ahead of the current trend.
Please make more illustrations in the style!!

I loved Roosevelt. I actually had a puppet of him when I was a kid, I wish I still had it.
I wish they would bring him back, he was so cool. I'd like to draw him.

I bought my daughter a huge Cookie Monster puppet, you can operate his hands (like gloves) and his head. It is pretty cool. I think I have more fun with it than she does.

I think you mean Don Music.
BTW, Awesome, awesome artwork. It looks just like the Sesame Street book illustrations from the early 1970's

Remember Bruno the Trashman?

Yeah, I remember Bruno. Whenever Oscar needed transportation without leaving the comforts of his trash can, Bruno the Trashman would usually be there as Oscar's personal chauffeur.

"C" is for cookie ..thats good enough for me...NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM.
I also miss the sesame street from my childhood. I mean they cleaned up oscars fur...the guy lives in a bin for goodness sake!
But since I live in south africa, we never got it season for season, we got a mised bag, from I think the early 70's to the late 80's . I was born in 86, and learnt to speak english from sesame street. Most afrikaans people from this country can speak english, but because of sesame street, I speak it without an afrikaans accent.
Anyway...enough rambling.
Loving your work. Makes me wanna jump in with watercolours again.
Peaceria.

Thanks! Yeah... This may sound weird but I feel like look less alive now. Before there was something more organic about them that had you believe that they were just fond some where and brought on the show to entertain people. Oh well we still have DvD.

i think it is the voices, because most of the original cast is either passed on (Henson and Richard Hunt), or doing different stuff...(like Frank Oz being a movie director ect ect...) they don;t have the "life" they once had. But I still love them!
