What do you use fr the background when you shoot, so that the edges of the model come out so clearly?

I have a rather crude piece of plywood, painted blue for the background.
I use a photoshop plugin called cinematte for the separation process, or sometimes I paint the background out. The separation is usually done with some degree of feathering, to render a more realistic edge.
