so i keep hearing fusion energy would be amazing (like one supertanker of it would power the USA for 100 years!)

Yeah, it's an ideal way to produce prodigious amounts of energy, the problem being the time scales and technology required.

Probably at least 40 years before any real significant amount of energy is produced using fusion.

what about that one they built in germany? the ITER one

I heard they were gonna do actual tests in 2020 and 2022

All of these reactors are achieving exactly what they were designed to do, and usually they achieve a certain temperature or duration of fusion.
I'm not sure exactly what ITER achieved, but I think it was a temperature. What is needed for commercial application is a high enough temperature, and a sustained reaction, both of which are difficult. The energy payback is also an issue, as massive laser imputs are needed to start the fusion process. Most of the reactors that have been built were never meant to maintain a fusion reaction more than a billionth of a second or something like that.
Thanks
Robert

that's what the crew said when it didn't explode!
Har!
Robert.
