these star trek images are always very interesting. if i had more time, i would experiment in doing some myself. i have been interested in trying to make "real" light in zero atmosphere, that is to day with no diffusion at all.

I freely admit to taking liberties on that front, with glowing lights, lens flares, et al. But I think with more hard science subjects, like 2001, I try to stay "pure". It doesn't always work... but I try

well, even in the latest movie, all of the outer space shots use diffuse and indirect lighting. so i wouldn't say you're taking liberties, i would say you're creating art in the same style as your subject matter.

Actually I'm not trying for photorealism in any of this. I'm more interested in making a striking visual statement... ala the Blish Trek covers of yore I was actually quite impressed when TMP tried to be more accurate with their deep space lighting... or 2001's visuals. But I'm usually after something a bit more interpretive/illustrated.... unless I'm not

they are very striking. they look how i imagine space looks, even though i know the reality is different.

Another one of them images where I say "Oh, look, an Arcass as soon as I see the thumbnail. That's a good thing, btw.

I tend to do the same thing with Ptrope. I can spot it ("it's quality") miles away.
