Description
If it was a fire fight the Gorns were after, the Constitution and Columbia were more than willing to oblige.I don't do many battle pix, but davemetlesits' ([link] ) new photon torpedo graphics resource cried out to me for some experimentation.
Connie by Aggie, Scout/Destroyer by some game I can't ever remember. Rendered in DS3 and finished in Photoshop.

Interesting to see the Hermes class scout at work. I never could decide if I liked that design.

Yeah, the whole issue of Franz Josef's designs are.... complicated. They're cool/fun, but they did throw a monkey wrench into some of Trek's internal tech logic... plus they set us down this path of mixing and matching saucers and nacelles, which is now a given (unfortunately).

thespawnof66 In reply to RobCaswell [2013-10-01 19:51:25 +0000 UTC]
I agree. The simple use of existing components that those designs suggest show a certain lack of either imagination or resources. Shared components would be realistic I suppose. But the designs that Franz Josef came up with seem impractical given their assigned missions. Though the "Saladin" class is better armed than the "Hermes" class, both types in my opinion seem very limited in their scanning capability. Also, their engine placement would seem to make them vulnerable to damage, and make them large targets given their large frontal areas.Β Β

My personal take on it is when you're going warp.... anynumber.... the placement of elements and profile of the craft don't really have any bearing. It's gonna take pretty heavy tech just to hit ANY target, let alone being specific about your hit zone.

Actually with my current imagination drought I've been submitting some of my older works to newer groups. So this one's from about two years back.
Still - THANKS!

This is a fabulous picture. The viewpoint, the sense of action, the cool way the destroyer's bussard is illuminating the underside of its primary module, it's all beautiful.

I think you nailed it with this image. I love the lighting from the weapons fire on the ship hulls, and also that your point of view isn't the stock right side up aspect, because after all, this is space, where up and down don't have the same meaning. Really nice work, this one's definitely a keeper.
Now, about that Dreadnaught...

Thanks. I think this is one of my personal faves, too. I'm not really into your classic images of starship combat (which are usually at too close range to be anywhere near accurate, anyway), but this gets around that by not even showing the foe. And I too like the implied energy of the ships' maneuvers.
Every once in a while, I strike gold

I'm glad I and others can at least provide metaphorical gold. Not if we could all be as generous with the real stuff right?

If I had "the real stuff", I'd just exchange it for the metaphorical variety. I'm that way

Small-fry ship getting to kick some arse for once! Great render!
Like how the smaller ship is named Columbia, is that in reference to OV-102, the NASA Shuttle Orbiter Columbia?
π: 0 β©: 1
RobCaswell In reply to Patriot1776 [2010-12-14 17:43:38 +0000 UTC]
The naming of the scout "Columbia" pre-dated the shuttle, but could have been in reference to the Apollo 11 CSM. The scout was first named in Franz Josef's Tech Manual and was later mentioned (in background voiceover) in ST: TMP.

Patriot1776 In reply to RobCaswell [2010-12-14 17:49:12 +0000 UTC]
True, the 'Columbia' name being derived from the Apollo 11 CSM is more fitting. The Shuttle Columbia did not do any such thing as glorious as visit another celestial body and had a more tragic end. *Plays 'Taps' for STS-107 crew*
