Description
An Orion 3 spaceplane with USAA livery climbs for orbit. This one came about when my buddy, Allen Steel, stopped by work yesterday to show me the Moebius Models Orion 3 plastic kit he just grabbed. Nice, if pricey. Later Drell-7 and I were discussing the aftermarket decal sheet available for the kit, and were both stunned that it didn't feature NCA or USAA liveries. He badgered me about dragging out my old decal construction tools, but... well, this is as good as he's gonna get from meSo this one's for Spunky n' Allen. OrionIII by Mattc (via Foundation3D.com). DAZ Studio/Photoshop.

Great news; the model kit of this ship will be returning back to store shelves:
Visionary director Stanley Kubrick took film audiences of 1968 four decades into the future with his mind-blowing science-fiction epic, 2001: A Space Odyssey. In the film's second act, NASA functionary Heywood Floyd travels from Earth to a space station in orbit aboard the Orion III spaceplane, designed by Harry Lange. The classic Aurora model kit is reissued for a new generation of modelers, with an updated pattern. The Orion III is 1/144-scale when fully constructed and comes with decals and base. Paint and glue required.

if you can still lay your hands on decal film, you should be able to jet-print them.... i gotta see if the krasel family are still around...
microscale industries is alive and well , and for 2.20 , clear decal film can be yours!
i need a workbench again....

I've pretty much moved onto 100% digital, these days.... though my basement's still full-to-the-ceiling with unbuilt kits.

i'm mostly mini figures and whatnot myself. since i moved [ a couple moves ago actually] , my stuff's been in storage , though i did pick through and sort out dried up paint last year and repack it. desperately NEED to kitbash/build/paint stuff to kill some stress. my 'personal space' is really limited to about what i'd have in tokyo... a 3x7 strip along the side of the bed.
this summer, i'll be setting up a work zone in the garage , but until then , i seem to be screwed. i still have some odd plane , tank , and building models, but not more than eight or so. but i've got enough wh40k figs to field TWO ARMIES OF SPECIALIST TROOPS ALONE MUAHHAHAHAHAAA! and literally 50+ lbs of lead and early pewter figs in fantasy, scifi, and modern warfare. nevermind all the 35mm plastic ones. an extra heads an kit bashin stuff that takes up lots more room [ a couple large storage bins]. now i'm going through withdrawal.

Plastic injection kit? No way. Prove it! If it existed, I would have AT LEAST known about it... and probably had it. Who was the manufacturer?

aurora definitely did, and revell ended up with nearly all their molds , though airfix had one the same scale [1/144], and came with a variety of decals , including 'pan am' .
mmhhm. airfix models DID DO the pan am one... and re-released it in early 2000. you should be able to track one down... the aurora [ which could actually be the same mould] is way too collectible now though.
www.starshipmodeler.com/2001/pre_airfix_orion.htm here's a link to a shot...
and here: www.airfixcollector.co.uk/spacefiction.htm has the cat# even!
and moebius makes this plastic inj model... [link]
so... proof?
the moebius kit's only 30$...

NI thought we were talking about a "Discovery" model? The Orion, sure - there was the Aurora and (crappier) Airfix models on that. The Aurora got reissued for the last time about '76. Of course now we have the Moebius kit.... even if it is awfully expensive for what you get (and no decals or engraved panel lines).

ahhhh.... i didn't have the dis kit , so , naturally my mind locked onto the orion....
as i remember , the detail was horrible, and the injection kit was about 13" long. the fore-end and aft end were cast in horizontal halves, and i think the middle sections were in several sections, cast horizontally as well. i remember they were warped, and the model had to be glued and placed under wax-papered books to dry straight and 'flat'. i think estes models did a display/not well-flying kit too. comet miniatures in the uk did a resin and pewter kit in the 90's. stargazer models did a beautiful 1/144th resin kit.. and an 18" kit is done in resin by frontier models. and i found this on ebay : [link]
i can find nothing on discovery standard plastic models made back then. sorry.

I bought the Orion reissue and still have my build-up on the shelf, though I guess I didn't write it up for Starship Modeler. It wasn't that bad a kit - at least mine wasn't. No serious warpage. I think my biggest challenge was the fact the panel lines on the right and left hull halves didn't align. But the new Moebius kit is WAY nicer in most respects. Not all, but most.
Hey, thanks for the Pod Bay link! I'd forgotten about that one!

plus, you can get the drop-in cargo mod for the moebius kit. and someone is doing a cargo mod for the eagles, too! i did a couple searches and found a crapload of stuff available. the company that did most of the modelwork for the movie apparently still turns out helmets to order...
the sharecg site was just a byproduct of my search, but i thought you might like it!
[link] <--- these guys used to be a favorite distributor of mine back in the old days. it's nice to see they're still up and running. they carry all kinds of photo-etch detailing stuff and aftermarket addons for stuff. including the moonbus! and vipers and stuff too, apparently..

This was one of my favorite models when I was younger - I'd 'fly' it around the room (slow and stately, of course! ) and then land it back on its stand. Beautiful shot!
Now to confess my ignorance: what are the NCA and USAA? Something tells me that context would cleatrr my fog right away ...

Ah, memories of our youth - seems like those carefree days of 49 was less than a year ago.
I used to have a blast flying the Aurora Fantastic Voyage (animated) Proteus around the house, landing it on kitchen counters.... and the cat.
USAA= From 2001, the "United States Astronautics Agency"
NCA= From 2010, the National Council on Aeronautics.

Aww, this is so sweet! I love this ship (second to the Discovery). I like the USAA livery. Considering the state of airline companies I doubt any will make it to space. The engine exhaust is really cool. Is there a story behind that?
