Description Time for yet another Past-Blaster (tm). This one's by request. Some of you may remember FASA's Star Trek RPG. One of the ships that they created for the game was the Ranger class Scout Escort. I immediately latched onto the design for its cool shape and its small size (ideal as an RPG ship!).

The original Ranger featured movie era nacelles, but I was a purist even then. I wanted to retrofit it to the TOS era so I redesigned the nacelles and struts, then decided to do it up in proper Franz Josef Tech Manual format. If I recall even those section numbers at the top fit the page into the proper book section

I made this back in the very early 80's, using my drawing board, T-square, and compass. The lettering was all pressure mount stuff - typical for graphics arts at the time. But it doesn't age well. Tends to flake off. So I redid all the callouts digitally for this scan.

I still like this lil' ship and got a warm, fuzzy feeling inside when I ran across Colourbrand's illustration of it [link]

Bit like the Karekh Class but a little bigger.

Should you have the time-inclination, would love to see front-rear profiles if possible.

Definitely a ship worthy of deckplans !

Love this ship design, very compact & cool..you are also spot-on about it being a great RPG vessel.
I've seen various renders of this ship & it may be like the Miranda-Class (The Reliant) & be able to traverse most to the Trek-eras..TOS through the DS9 dominion war.

Once a RPGer, always an RPGer. Even when there's no game involved, I tend to see concepts through an RPG lens

The more I look at this little ship the more I want to build a model of it, and this and the color orthographic would make great references.

I'm glad I still have all my original FASDA Trek RPG books. It was a really well-made RPG

It was, though their starship creation rules seemed to go in circles when we tried 'em. The basic set was awesome, though!

This is one of my favorite ships from the FASA game. In fact, I've been recently toying with running a Star Trek RPG for my friends, set aboard one of these little ships. Love seeing it with the old style nacelles.

It really does make a nice RPG-adventure sized ship

This is one of my favorite ships from the FASA Federation Starship Recognition Manual. I've been toying with using the Fate RPG for a Star Trek campaign, probably set aboard one of these scouts. Cool to see it with the older nacelles.

Yep. Not a lot of extraneous goo-gahs. This ship is small and to-the-point

Ooh, that is vintage. Even with the 60s style engine, that design really feels like that 70s heyday of unofficial TOS stuff so I like it much better than the "movie" style one. It's a time I wish I'd gotten to experience. Perfect recreation of the pages of Franz Joseph's book, too.

It WAS a good time.... only we didn't realize how good it was until after the fact, like so many other things.

Could this be classed in the same league (dunno if that's the right word) as a DS9 Runabout?

RobCaswell In reply to Evohunter7 [2012-06-30 03:22:02 +0000 UTC]

Nah. Probably closer to the Defiant, but without such kick-ass weapons.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

This is a QUALITY picture - more detailed and more impressive!

Fell in love with her too all them years ago - way better than the shit scouts they made along with it - the Bader and the Keith? WTH?

"I made this back in the very early 80's, using my drawing board, T-square, and compass. The lettering was all pressure mount stuff - typical for graphics arts at the time."Ah yes...that brings back memories

Thank you sir! Thanks for sharing this with us all!

I still have a folder-full of that pressure sensitive stuff packed away in my basement.... though I'm betting it's all too dried out to be functional, these days
Glad you liked this little nugget from my archive!

Not only remember it but play on a regular basis. I like your TOS touch to the Ranger it suits much better than FASA's cut and paste Enterprise/ Reliant style nacelles on such a little craft.

RobCaswell In reply to karanua [2012-06-28 14:47:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I think if I were to do this as a TOS version today, I'd probably tweak the primary hull a bit. This might be a project of mine for later in the year.

Nice rendering. I've done a few ST RPG type games, but the ships I always stuck the players with were either Orion or Wyn. In one game, they got command of THE Wyn Pocket Battleship... That Klingon D-7A never knew what hit it... )
