Name: Samuel Sterling

Sam Sterling was an exceptionally bright child growing up. He was a source of pride for his mother Teresa and his older brother Eric. He excelled in school, and was considered to be on the road to do great things, getting the opportunity to take part in many special programs. However, his intelligence and success in school was not a source of pride for Sam, since it isolated him from his classmates who regarded him doing well as "Selling out." Sam grew to resent his intelligence, and tried to do his best to downplay it, but could not bring himself to do so lest he disappoint his hardworking mother. His older brother could see how Sam was wasting his potential, with Sam's attitude being a constant source of conflict between the two.

Sam's life changed forever when he was part of a special excursion to a scientific experiment. While touring an advanced laboratory, an experiment involving dark matter went haywire and struck Sam with a bolt of cosmic energy. The accident was brushed off as Sam just getting an accidental shock, with many of the technicians not even realizes they lost containment on their experiment. However, Sam felt something strange had happened. His concerns were realized when he suddenly appeared outside of his bedroom on his fire escape one morning, having teleported in the night. Sam soon learned that the accident at the lab allowed him to teleport short distances, and he soon began to find ways to use this to his advantage.

After a few small pranks, Sam began to use his newfound abilities to ingratiate himself with the "Cool kids" at his school, a group that were also part of a larger gang. This infuriated Eric, who had become a police officer in the Guardian City Police Department, as he felt that Sam was throwing his life away. Sam ignored Eric's concerns, and became a more prominent member in the gang. Sam kept his abilities a secret, but he had become known as someone who could get to places where others couldn't, even crafting a special outfit to aid him in his nightly endeavors. One night, Sam was coerced by the leader of the gang to help them procure a shipment. Sam agreed, but found out soon afterwards that it was a shipment of guns that the gang had hoped to increase their presence on the streets. Sam was horrified and fled the gang, but said nothing for fear of reprisal. But this indifference would cost him dearly.

The next night, Teresa received horrible news. Eric had been called to the scene of a disturbance, and found members of Sam's former gang who were preparing for an ambush on their rivals. A firefight broke out, and Eric was shot and killed. Sam immediately blamed himself for what happened, and for being the indirect cause of his brother's death. After a period of grief, Sam remembered what his elder brother told him about living up to his potential, and the good he could do for the world. Taking his older brother's words to heart, Sam vowed to not only make something of himself, but also use his abilities to help others. Sam graduated high school and then college, becoming an architect like he always dreamed. But at night, he prowls the streets of Guardian City, protecting the innocent citizens from the various criminal elements as the urban hero Nightshadow.

Sam is an exceptionally intelligent young man. He presents an attitude of being laid back and care free, to the point where others underestimate him and his intelligence. However, his experiences with his brother changed him to where he has become far more compassionate and understanding of the needs of others. He presents a devil may care attitude during his time as Nightshadow, which belies the seriousness at which he takes his task. Sam prefers to work alone, not wanting to burden anyone with his problems, which has led him to be a bit of a lone wolf amongst the other heroes.

Thanks to the exposure to the Dark Matter energy, Sam's body has been changed so that he can generate quick charges that he can unleash in a variety of ways. He can build up this charge within him very quickly, taking around 30 seconds minimum to build up the necessary power to discharge it as he needs, with longer intervals allowing him to accomplish greater feats. He can use this charge as a quick boost to his physical strength, allowing him to leap great distances or move quickly or to increase the power of his blows against his opponents. The greater the charge he gathers before it's release, the stronger the feat. But his primary ability is his power of teleportation. Building up a charge, Sam can teleport himself across a limited distance. He requires to be in line of sight of where he is going, or else he may accidentally teleport into a solid object. Again, the greater the charge Sam builds up, the farther he can teleport. Rapid use of charging his powers can drain him physically. If he boosts his strength too much, or teleports too much too quickly, he could pass out due to the strain. Teleporting others with him also causes a strain on him, as he has to build up a significant charge in order to do so. If need be, Sam can draw upon his own stamina for these incredible feats, but it does drain him considerably.

So, yeah, Nightshadow should be pretty familiar to those who know something about my page, as I've depicted him before and done some work on his world. I felt that he'd be a good fit for this "World" of heroes, fulfilling the role of a lone urban crimefighter like Spider-Man or Daredevil. I just decided to use this opportunity to flesh out and specify his powers, to show what he can and cannot do.
