Description "I am Atrocitus: Lord and Master of the Red Lantern Corps.  I am the one who will destroy the Guardians and all they stand for.  I am wrath!  I am hate!!  I am righteous vengeance!!!"

Following the Massacre of Sector 666 by the Manhunters, only 5 of the sector's demonic inhabitants survived, one of them Atros, swore revenge against what he believed was a genocide, and that the Guardians of the Universe, who professed peace, lied to them and unleashed the Manhunters to eradicate them.  With little sanity left, Atros' rage seethed within him, and he led the other four as part of a terrorist cell called the Five Inversions.  On their Citadel of Shard, and their capital planet of Ysmault, they made their moves against the Guardians, but were summarily defeated and imprisoned on Ysmault.  Atros himself though, managed to escape and killed the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, Abin Sur.  When one of the Inversions, Qull, told the Lanterns what happened, Atrocitus was recaptured and reimprisoned with the other Inversions.  Feeling betrayed, his anger reached to a boiling point.  Atros was unaware, but he and another one of the Inversions, Qull's sister, Roixeaume, drew the attention of another demon: Trigon the Terrible.  Atros told Trigon their tale, and offered that if he freed the two of them and granted them their vengeance, they would offer their services to him.  Trigon accepted their offer and saved their lives.  In their rage, the two killed the other three Inversions, and used their blood as part of a ritual.  Trigon then presented a red power battery and rings to the two of them.  On donning the rings, their hearts stopped and their blood spoiled, causing them to vomit it out.  Yet in the process, it gave them great strength and power.  Twisted into doing Trigon's bidding to create an army to destroy the Guardians and the Green Lanterns, Atros was reborn as Atrocitus: leader of the Red Lantern Corps...

For Atrocitus' look, I was mostly heavily inspired by his appearance in Green Lantern: The Animated Series, since that was his first on-screen appearance as the leader of the Red Lanterns.  He is a true villain, bound both to Trigon's will and the anger in his heart.  He recruited mostly to his cause those who were victims of the Sinestro Corps, such as Bleez, but he also went as far as to conquer entire planets, like Volkreg, killing all the inhabitants save one, such as Razer, because he saw their potential for hatred and rage.

Disclaimer:  Atrocitus belongs to DC Comics, Geoff Johns, & Ethan Van Sciver

Involving Trigon in the creation of the Red Lantern Corps is an interesting idea, though like mindmaster123 I prefer it when Atrocitus is more of an anti-hero instead of a full on villain like in the Green Lantern animated series and here. I don't mind it though, since it still works. Especially with the connection to Trigon.

I figured that since Atrocitus was a demon, that it was only right that Trigon create the Red Lantern Corps to act as his army, as that way it could give a whole lot more potential. And that’s what I feel that GLTAS nailed. Having Trigon get involved I felt was just the next step, as he’s always looking to conquer and destroy. He won’t stop until all life is remade in his hellish image, and Atrocitus was the one who could carry out his will.

So in a way, your Atrocious is like Brother Blood?

Robin250 In reply to PeterVanHelsing [2020-04-23 02:42:21 +0000 UTC]

No. Atrocitus relies on his anger to carry out Trigon’s will, as well as fulfill his own personal agenda. Brother Blood, however, uses dark rituals and heretical texts to try and bring Trigon directly to Earth, or at the very least have him possess a human as his host. You know how demonic possession works. The blood rituals that Brother Blood uses for his bathing is in a catacomb within the Church of Blood’s base in Xandia. This cave is imbued with Trigon’s dark power, as it’s where he became before the first Brother Blood back during the Baltic Crusades.

Question: Does Blackest Night happen in your universe?

Robin250 In reply to PeterVanHelsing [2020-04-23 02:47:46 +0000 UTC]

No. Absolutely not. It doesn’t happen. In most cases in my take on the DC universe, the dead stay dead. Ra’s al-Ghul being the only exception, of course, as well as those who have easy access to a Lazarus Pit.

No. I felt that it was unnecessary, just like Cry for Justice was.

It wasn't nearly as unnecessary as Cry for Justice. I personally like Blackest Night. It's not perfect, but it's a fun concept with a lot of neat moments. The biggest issue I have with it are unnecessary deaths (like Garth) and the derailment of Owen Mercer, son of Captain Boomerang. But the idea of Blackest Night is a terrifying one with a lot of potential.

Robin250 In reply to PeterVanHelsing [2020-04-23 03:05:17 +0000 UTC]

See, that’s how I felt it was unnecessary. There were quite a few deaths that could have been avoided, Holly Granger/Hawk being among them. The only panel I did like was when Omen projected into Starfire’s head a vision of her and Dick finally getting married.

PeterVanHelsing In reply to Robin250 [2020-04-23 03:14:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, poor Holly...

But I wouldn't call it unnecessary because it was the culmination of other storylines that were building up to the Blackest Night. And it did have some awesome moments, my favorite being when Wonder Woman was deputized as a Star Sapphire. Because, yes. Wonder Woman is the embodiment of love, so that makes perfect sense. Blackest Night is actually part of why Wonder Woman is my favorite DC hero, because it showed how she embodies love and compassion.

True, Wonder Woman is one of the greatest of DC’s heroes, but Dr. Marston’s philosophy of having her be a “love leader” is a mismatch of ideas. Also, he did have a pretty messed up love life. Also, his versions of the Amazons as being isolationists who desires peace and beauty completely contradicted how they have been seen since Ancient Greece.

That’s why I decided to have the Amazons stay more faithful to their mythic origins as the daughters of Ares, since war was common in Ancient Greece, and even in Roman times. The Romans saw war as defending their own lands and protecting oppressed peoples against tyranny, and also to protect their own interests. Though I also chose to have them as faithful to their historic roots as their own band of empire building warriors: nomadic horsewomen from the vast steppes of Asia. I’ve always had a soft spot for Nomadic Empires, be it the Huns or the Mongols.

A soft spot for Mongols, but not for Mongul.

No soft spot for him. Though I am thinking a soft spot for Mongal.

Mongul was mentioned in your entry on Grodd, which leads me to believe that the events of Superman/Batman: Public Enemies happened in your universe because of the characters you mentioned that Grodd was able to control.

I am sad that film is the only media exposure Nightshade has gotten. She's a vastly underrated heroine in my opinion.

Hmm. I may come up with a use for her in the Justice League; maybe give her an arc of her own.

I would really like that. Nightshade was one of my favorite characters in John Ostrander's Suicide Squad series, which is honestly one of my favorite comics.

I don't if I haven't said this before, but Atrocitus is my favourite character from DC comics.

Interesting that you added Trigon to his lore. I'm not too hot on you making Atrocitus a full bad guy, though, the grey area that Atrocitus stays at is part of what made the character appealing to me.

Well he was a full on villain in GLTAS so I was doing that to honor that series. Though the part with Trigon was something that came off the top of my head!

The way you drew this character impresses me a lot I think you did a great job! His hand and fingers are detailed, the way you did his eyes stands out from the rest of the coloring you did, making him look intimidating, and the armor is cool and well drawn!

The details you did with the lines on his face, not just his eyes but his eyebrows, teeth, horns, and his nose and cheeks all go together to form a very cool looking face design. The face expression itself has a bitter power to it. Anger is a strong force no matter what species is feeling the anger.

Great drawing here! The written info helped me understand more about him too.

Thank you very much! I don’t draw pupils for demons as it makes them much more terrifying in my opinion. The Red Lanterns are always angry, save for those who are healed like Bleez. His armor was based off the one he wore in the Green Lantern animated series. I had a hard time doing the shine from light on the armor and uniform.

Think of Atrocitus as like a Nazgûl, bound to the power ring he wears, and a slave to Trigon’s will; neither living nor dead. He’s in a perpetual state of rage and hate. He knows nothing else and destroys entire civilizations in the name of his master.

Thanks! The servitude to Trigon was something that came off the top of my head!

You are very welcome! I've heard a lot of negativity for years now about Green Lantern as a whole because of the live action movie so I haven't given the animated series or other movies a chance, but seeing your recent drawings I am getting an urge to give the animated Green Lantern a chance ^^

For the record the animated version of Green Lantern is 10x better than the live action movie with Ryan Reynolds. Plus it includes Lanterns like Guy Gardner, Iolande (who will be coming to the gallery soon), and includes references to Hawkman, Starfire and John Stewart is even mentioned. All that was missing was a Green Arrow reference. Other than that, it is awesome! ^^

Thanks! I’m glad you think so. I figured that since they were both demons, that it seemed appropriate for Trigon to be involved with the creation of the Red Lantern Corps, well that is until he tried to corrupt Raven and she ended up sealing him away in Hell, of course.

Um... there's something missing...no...make that someone missing in this pic.  A certain furry feline enforcer.  Hey, Dex was probably one of the more brutal Red Lanterns.

And one of saddest origin stories.  I would love to see them give the little guy at least some closure by having him catch up with the thugs that murdered his human.

I know. Though maybe he could even end up finding a new owner to love and care for him as well. Oh let’s say...Starfire? Tamaraneans were originally cat-like in appearance before they evolved to resemble more of humans. Plus we all know about her weakness for all things cute and fluffy. She could remind Dex of his former master and instantly warm up to her.

The leader of the Reds. Atrocitus looks amazing. I like that you went with his look from the GLTAS; that design was definitely more demonic looking then his look from the comic (his comic look looks like something out of a B-movie horror flick).

Robin250 In reply to 1987man [2018-06-09 02:08:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, his comic appearance was more like a dinosaur like creature, so I went for something that made him look like the demon he is, albeit one from outer space. You can see from his personality why Bleez left the Corps after Simon cured her. How he became the thing he reviled and destroys planets all secretly in the name of his master.
