What a beauty she is, and big too at just roundabout 1 year old! How early do they start training with the porpoises for her to already be able to do a jump like this?

The captive calves are bigger/fatter and grow faster than their wild counterparts.

This because there is plenty of milk since mom gets all the food she needs to produce it. Plus the weaning period is extended (The period of both drinking milk and starting to eat fish lasts quite long). Β There are also no real dangers so things as harsh climate, having to swim many miles to look for food/escape predators is also not present and young calves do not perform yet, so they aren't as 'fit' as the wild ones either.

this is a picture of two six-month old porpoises, one was rescued and one was born at the park: Β farm5.staticflickr.com/4004/44…

You can clearly see who has been having an easy start

Young calves both rescued and born there start as young as possible with the medical training, this can be as early as 7 months. Because of their playful nature they will start to get interest in the target ball themselves:Β robindv.deviantart.com/art/72-… Β  and then it is quite easy to train. It's also a very good way to see the entire body and check the physical condition of the porpoise (since cetaceans are very good in hiding illness) since you can see if he/she jumps lower than usual.

Wow, what a difference between the two! Almost enough size difference to think they're 'mom' and 'baby' themselves Thanks for the info on training
