Chapter 15: The Unexpected

A/N: This chapter contains some light shipping, so if you don't like shipping just skip over some of it. It's not super important to know in order to understand the rest of the story. Don't say I didn't warn you! If you're going to read this chapter, make sure you read Chapter 14 first. Also, if you can spot the Fluffle Puff reference, you get a cookie. :3

  "Okay, for a long while now I've known you're evil, but despite that..." Sunset's voice trailed off.

  Gah! Don't leave me hanging. "Go on, despite that what?" I said.

  Sunset cheeks began turning pink. "I've kind of had, well, um, have, a bit of a crush on you," she said, trying to avoid my gaze.

  I began blushing in spite of myself. Was that why I get so upset when Aria mentions there may be something between me and Sunset? Did I have feelings for Sunset Shimmer and I didn't even know about it? Well, whatever! I didn't care! I was not about to let this get in my way of winning and going back to Equestria!

  "Aww, Sunset.  How cute," I said. "But it's too bad I don't care for love."

  A sneer crossed my face.

  Sunset's eyes began watering.

  "Oh," she said. "Well, I-I have to go now. I have somewhere I need to be," Sunset said, walking out.

  I walked out too.

  I walked up the stairs to the apartment the girls and I lived in. I searched my pockets for the key, only to discover I didn't have it.

  I pulled out my phone and called Aria. "Hi, Adagio," she said.

  "Hey Aria, could you let me in? I forgot my key," I said. "Sure," Aria said.

  A couple seconds after hanging up with her I heard the door unlock.

"Thanks," I said.

"No problem," Aria said.

  I walked inside.

  "So what's up? What happened?" Aria asked.

  "It turns out that you were right; there was something between me and Sunset Shimmer that I didn't know about. Apparently we have feelings for each other," I said.

  Aria frowned. "Darn it!" she said.

  "What?" I said.

  "I owe Sonata fifty dollars," she said.

  I giggled a little. "When it comes to Sonata, I'd say it's best to expect the unexpected," I said. "Why do you owe her fifty dollars?"

  "She bet me fifty dollars that you and Sunset have feelings for each other," Aria said.

  Sonata walked out of her bedroom. "So, was I right?" she said.

  "No," I lied.

  "Aww," Sonata said, walking disappointedly back into her room.

  "I saved you from Sonata. Now pay me fifty dollars," I teased.

  "Well, I guess that's better than having to surrender to Sonata," Aria huffed, reaching into her pocket.

  "Just kidding!" I said. Aria rolled her eyes with wry amusement.

  "So, Battle of the Bands is tomorrow. Are you two prepared?" I asked. "I'd say so. We rehearsed our song, like, five-hundred times," Aria said. "Good," I said.

  "We can all get some rest tonight then," I said.

  "Sounds great," Aria said. "I was getting tired of rehearsing, but winning the battle is very important, of course."

  Aria began walking off to her room when something hit me that I thought I should tell her.

  "And Aria," I said.

  "Yeah?" she replied.

  "Don't doubt for a moment that I will lead us to victory. I'm not going to let pathetic little Sunset Shimmer, or anyone else stand in the way," I said.

  "I'd never doubt you; you obviously know what you're doing," Aria said.

  "Well, it's good to know that," I said.

  "Yeah. I mean, you got us this far even after I'd said it'd be impossible to ever go back to Equestria," Aria said. "While I'd rather be leader myself, I do think you are a good leader, Adagio. You've been able to pull off something unexpected that Equestrians would have deemed impossible. We were able to restore our magic in a world without magic."

  "Thanks. You know I don't abandon my goals once they've been set," I said.

  I yawned. Aria yawned too.

  "I'm going to go to bed early," I said.

  "Me too. G'night, Adagio," Aria said.

  "Good night," I said.

  I walked off toward my room.

  I changed into my pajamas and leapt onto my bed. I let out a relieved sigh. Things had been so crazy lately. I'll be glad when Battle of The Bands starts, but I'll also be glad when it's over too. Things could finally go back to normal after that...

  I still couldn't believe about Sunset. I had no idea we even had feelings for each other; it's odd really, I would've never expected pretending to be friends with the enemy would lead up to this. It seems so backwards... But, it was like I said before: I'm not letting anyone stand in my way of winning, no matter what.

  When we win Battle of the Bands and get our true Equestrian magic back, the only person I won't do anything to is Sunset Shimmer, mainly because I do like her a little bit. But should she stand in our way, I'll show her no mercy, I thought.

  I yawned. I'd better get some sleep. Can't be tired tomorrow since I'll be performing.

  I closed my eyes and went to sleep. I could hardly sleep, though; I was too excited. How would tomorrow go? Who would win? Well, the girls and I would win, of course. I was looking forward to the competition and I was hoping that we actually have some well-rounded competitors; it's no fun when things are too easy. I want a difficult battle.

  I woke up the next morning. It was the weekend, but I chose not to sleep in.

  I got up immediately and got dressed. No special outfit or anything; I was saving that for the finals.

  I went into the living room and the girls were already awake but hadn’t gotten ready yet. Figures as much, they’re usually two paces (well, Sonata’s usually five paces, not to split hairs) behind me in the first place.

  "Good morning!" Sonata exclaimed enthusiastically.

  "Good morning," I said. "I assume everyone's pretty much ready for the first round?"

  "Yeah," Aria said.

  "Yep," Sonata said.

  "Good," I said. "We're going to rock this competition."

  "Tch, of course we are. We are the Dazzlings after all," Aria said. "Rocking things is pretty much our destiny."

  "Then let's go win ourselves a battle," I said confidently.

  The girls went to go get ready. In the meantime, I was taking care of a few last minute things. There were five rounds or so for the competition, but I only had written two songs so far. The worst part is; we’re absolutely guaranteed to make it to the finals so I had to write three more songs. Ugh. I both love and I hate being the one who writes all the songs.

  I thought about maybe asking Aria if she’d written anything. I’d ask Sonata, but the last time she wrote a song it was a silly one about blue furry Alicorns dancing on clouds which was her version of Pink Fluffy Unicorns Dancing on Rainbows.

  I walked to Aria's room and knocked on the door.

  "Come in, Adagio," she said.

  "Hey Aria, I've got a question to ask you," I said.

  "Yeah? What is it?" Aria said.

  "You haven't written any songs have you? I still need to write some, but I wanted to see if you had any," I said.

"I have. Over there in that notebook with my cutie mark on it," Aria said, gesturing to a notebook sitting on a side table next to her bed.

  "Mind if I look?" I asked.

  "No. Go on and take a look," Aria said. "I don't think they're very good, but if you wanna look then look."

  "Thanks, I will," I said.

  I grabbed her notebook and opened it. I read each page of lyrics carefully. I was shocked that Aria didn't think these lyrics were very good; I thought they were fantastic. After I finished reading it, I closed the notebook gently.

  "Aria, you're right. The lyrics aren't very good," I said. "They're great."

  "You think so?" Aria said, surprised.

  "Yes!  What vocal range are they for?" I asked.

  "As much as I'd love to sing lead for the songs I wrote; I had you in mind to sing them, 'cause I thought your voice would sound great with them," Aria replied.

  "Thanks," I said.

  "You're welcome," Aria said.

  "Would you mind if we played a few of them for the competition?" I asked.

  "Nah. I wouldn't mind at all," Aria said.

  "Great!" I said.

  Now the band was covered for every round. I've written songs for the first and last rounds of the competition while I have songs from Aria for each round in between. This was going to be an exciting competition for sure.

  I wondered how good the Rainbooms were. It'd be quite an interesting battle if they're almost equal to us. By almost equal I mean they're not quite as good as us but still good enough to put up a decent fight. If they can resist our powerful magic then they were definitely of interest to me.

  The girls walked out of their respective rooms. Now they were ready to go. We were prepared to win the Battle of The Bands. However, it goes without saying that the Rainbooms will try to interfere with our plans and try to stop us.
