Chapter 18: You Didn't Know That You Fell
A/N: There's a small bit at the very end that kind of goes against the lore I have developed for this series, I'll probably try fixing it at a later date, but for now it shall remain the same. Sorry this was posted so late.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now every student in this room (except the Rainbooms) was bickering over who was the better band. This was becoming far too easy.
We've got the music, makes you move it~
Got the song that makes you lose it~
We say 'jump', you say 'how high?'~
Put your hands up to the sky!-
Oh-whoa-oh, oh-whoa-oh~
The girls and I moved our free arms back and forth as we swayed slightly.
You didn't know that you fell~
Oh-whoa-oh, oh-whoa-oh~
Now that you're under our spell~
Oh-whoa-oh, oh-whoa-oh~
Now that you're under our~
It was time for me to deliver the finishing note just as a trail of negative energy was beginning to enter into our pendants.
Spell~ I finished.
I laughed wickedly.
Now if we could just get to the Rainbooms; then we'd be unstoppable.
The lights flicked back on and Celestia and Luna began clapping. The bickering students stopped and the girls and I walked down the stairs at the front of the stage.
We were met with thunderous applause as we walked down and people were whistling in between claps. They began chanting the name of our band. It was so exciting; I hadn't heard that kind of applause in a long time.
The unfortunate part is: we still have to watch several other bands perform. I barely listened to the names of the bands that were being called up. The other performances were incredibly long and boring.
It felt like this was going on for hours.
"Our final performance will be from Flash Sentry and Flash Drive," Celestia announced.
The blue haired guitarist boy from earlier took the stage. I hold to the opinion that he's a jerk.
The band was OK; a bit show off-y for my taste. The boy played on his guitar with such confidence.
"How funny," I remarked in a whisper to Aria and Sonata, "he thinks he actually stands a chance of winning."
Aria suppressed a laugh while Sonata giggled quietly.
A minute or so later, the song had finally ended and it was finally time to announce who was moving on. Given the girls and I were great performers, we were moving on for sure. Celestia and Luna began writing some last minute things down.
Everyone else seemed to be holding their breath waiting for the names to be announced. Celestia and Luna walked up onto the stage and grabbed a microphone.
"The bands who will be moving onto the second round are…" Celestia began naming the bands one by one.
The girls and I were the first to be called.
We walked proudly up onto the stage. Quite a few other bands were called up as well. The most notable ones were Flash Sentry's band, Trixie's band, and the Rainbooms. This competition was officially interesting.
"Alright, everyone, you may go home and we will see you tomorrow," Celestia deadpanned.
The girls and I walked off the stage and headed home. On our way out of the school, we saw Sunset Shimmer who was staring at us longingly.
I looked back at her.
"If you have something to say, then say it. Or, keep your mouth shut and stop staring," I said to her.
She looked as if she was about to say something, but she turned her head which showed she was too scared to. She's pathetic, like I said before.
You know, in fact, I've lost interest in Sunset completely. She might still have feelings for me, but I don't care. She's the harmless one who wants to do everything right, while I'm the fiery villain who's not going to let anyone stand in my way. People (or ponies) like us just don't mix, understand?
I slowed my pace a little so I could talk to Aria.
"By the way, Aria, I have no interest in Sunset Shimmer anymore. So if you're still worried about that, you can stop worrying," I said.
Aria rolled her eyes.
"Ugh, I was never worried. I just thought it was stupid that you almost liked her," she said.
"Well I don't anymore," I said. "And that's if I ever even did, which I didn't."
"Uh huh," Aria said, "if you say so, Dazzle."
"When did Dazzle happen?" I asked, using that as an opportunity to change the subject.
"Sonata calls you 'Dagi' and so I felt the impulse to come up with a cool nickname for you," Aria explained.
"And so you just call me by my last name?" I said.
"I thought it sounded cool," Aria said.
"Okay then," I said. "I guess that does sound kind of cool."
I could have done better, but whatever.
I had something more interesting to say, but I needed to wait until Sunset Shimmer was out of earshot. As we walked farther down the hall, I kept my mouth shut because I got the feeling we were being followed; probably by Sunset. It's odd really; no matter how many times I prove myself as a villain to her she always continues to be follower of us.
I was starting to wonder if I shouldn't be doing this anymore. Just considering Sunset likes us so much, I don't know if I'd want to lose her as a friend- er, follower. Wait. Who am I kidding? What's one follower when you've got an entire world, well, two worlds?
We walked onto the front lawn. I kept looking back to make sure Sunset wasn't too close to us. "Girls, when we get back there's something I need to tell you," I said. "I'm looking forward to hearing what it is. You've got that smirk on your face that tells me it's gonna be good," Aria said.
"Trust me, it is," I said.
"Oh, I trust you alright," Aria said. We walked down the street and quickly made it to the city. I wanted to check out Carousel Boutique, but when I peeked in the window I realized that it was being run by one of the girls who'd confronted us at the kickoff party for the battle of the bands.
Don't want to go in there, I thought.
It was only a little ways before we got home. Once we were home, I took a seat on the couch while the girls sat in the seats adjacent to me. "So girls," I began, "what do you say we try to recruit Sunset Shimmer back into the group?"
"Dazzle, I thought you said you were over her," Aria said. "I am. I was just thinking maybe we should try to mess with her head. Just in case she still thinks she can interfere with us," I said. "Not a bad idea," Aria said.
"I'd feel bad for her, though," Sonata said.
Of course she'd feel bad for Sunset; Sonata's a bit more on the soft side. The only reason Sonata even does anything villainous is because I do it, unless she's in the mood to switch her personality to a ditsy, villainous idiot instead of just a ditsy idiot. She's just a bit two-faced.
"Anyways," I said. "I'm going to go ahead and create that extra ’pendant’. I doubt she'll change, but I'm going to create it anyways. Just in case."
"Alright then," Aria said.
I decided to leave the conversation at that and go to my room before anyone could protest. I went in and opened dresser drawer.
I pulled out a piece of ribbon from the drawer and a red gem just like the one I wear. I got out an attachment piece so I could attach the gem to the ribbon. I attached the gem and attachment piece to the ribbon and created a new pendant.
Hey, if Sunset knows about Equestrian sirens, won't she know it's impossible to "make" someone a siren?
I hope you don't mind my asking, but what do you mean?
I only ask because I want to make sure I answer properly.
Sunset Shimmer knows about Equestrian sirens. If she does, this means she would have studied them and their history through Celestia. In the movie, however, she did not recognise them. (Sorry, but I have to refer to canon here.) Not recognising them by itself doesn't mean much, because she would not have known what the mirror would turn sirens into if it turns dragons into dogs. However, not recognising them for who they were plus knowing what defeats them suggests she has lots of understanding of the magical creatures of Equestria and not much about the mirror. Ignore the part about not understanding the mirror for now - I'll get to that. Understanding the sirens' weakness would mean getting a hell of a lot of information about them from somewhere. That information would probably have included info about their jewels. In Equestria, the jewels are a part of them, and they are born with them. As an ordinary pony, Sunset would know that a siren is not a transfigured pony. If they are, however, in any way related to ponies they would be related to beings of real power - aka the alicorns. Sunset was smart enough to more than Celestia shared with Twilight, so Celestia had been more open with her. This relates to headcanon about Celestia being Sunset's mother, which is something I'll go further into. Sunset would then be very distantly related to the sirens, and would therefore have access to more information about them. She would know the jewels cannot just be "created", as Adagio seems to do, and given to anyone, so she wouldn't accept the necklace for the "power" it would give her, and instead to gain the Dazzlings' loyalty, if the power was what you were originally going to say she accepted it for. Sunset would not become a Dazzling, and she would know it.
You raise an excellent point, and I actually didn't think about that back when I wrote this. There are lots of things need to be reworked because they don't make 100% sense. I'd also like to say, “thank you” for the lengthy reply; I enjoy reading feedback like this. I'll definitely admit this story has lots of imperfections which could really stand to be fixed; so it's nice to have someone offer up a different perspective.
I considered the idea of Sunset distantly being related to one of the Sirens, but by time I'd come up with it, I'd gotten to far in (to the point of being almost completely finished with this fic) and didn't think I could work it in without throwing it in randomly. If I ever pick up fanfic writing again (I've been experiencing major writing burnout for a while and haven't been able to get any work done on it), I'll have to find away to work this idea into the series (assuming I actually finish the prequel and sequel I'd been working on).
There are lots of chapters that have to be heavily reworked due to conflicting information that goes against things that have been stated previously or after.
Thanks for the insight!
