Description
The infamous "sucker car". One of my favourite cars ever. A radical design entered into the can-am racing series about 1970. It has fans powered by a snowmobile engine that evacuates the underside of the car, creating lots of downforce even at low speeds. It has suspended lexan skirts that reduce the rate at which air leaks under the body. It promply trashed all the other cars and the technology was banned for the next year. A bit of a shame, since i would be very interested to see how it would have evolved. Some say that was the beginning of the end of can-am. You can find out more on the internet, and drive it in GT4.Pencils, coloured on the comp. I wish i had added in some kerbing on the right hand side to show the car doing what it does best: going around corners very fast!

Charraparels make me laugh, cray design but for the time period they were awesome. Must have looked so alien to the people huh?
I haven't driven it in GT4 yet, raced against it though

I love the Chaparrals. There must have been a few scratched heads the first time it made an appearance though.

It was styled like a brick. I quite like how it looks so brutal and simplistic, although i'm pretty sure the optimum shape would be a bit more curvy. It's a testament to how effective the fan was- that it beat everything else in it's first iteration.
1970 isn't that long ago- they'd put men on the moon in 1969. The technology isn't that high- it's just a fan... the reason the old group c's and can-ams outpace the other cars in gt4 is because the regulations were different. I hear the laptimes in gt4 are quite realistic (at least for some cars), but i'm not entirely convinced how accurately they model nuances of the suspension, computer systems etc-- stuff that is better on modern cars.
I would be very interested to see what a racecar built to old style regulations, using modern technology would be like- would it use fans like the 2j or the brabham, of just ground effect like the lotus 79? One day i'm going to read up on aerodynamics and find out.

The Chaparral cars are the oogliest things ever x____X;; But considering their age, they're farkin' good. I got my ass rammed all the way around Fuji in my Audi race car by that wretched 2J...>>;
Amazing technology for that, 1970? The true testament to it is that it almost keeps up with the better of the modern race cars, judging by its performance against them in GT4... (Yeah I know it's bad to judge things on a game, but hey, one can dream, right?)
It would be interesting to see how that technology would have developed to today. It would have revolutionised racing technology.

I'll let you do the researching on that one...this is so far beyond my level of expertise it's not even funny
Though you're right about the 70's not being that long ago. Especially with getting men on the moon. But still, when you think about it, that was over 30 years ago, and things have changed immensely since then technologically (fuck, you buy a 'state-of-the-art' computer one year, and it's only an average family computer in the next year x___x)...technologically, it kinda was a while ago. The design speaks for itself. Depends on what angle you're looking from though.

What a crazy looking car. Makes me wish my copy of GT4 hadn't been sliced up by my naughty PS2.

Sliced up? That's no good. Has the warranty expired?
