First time doing a space background, first time doing a background in general actually.

These "Planet Takers" are made by a race of intergalactic lifeforms that focus mainly on expanding their territory as well as military power. One method they found to claim planets and expand is to construct giant mechanical ship-like machines to travel and forcefully claim planets by terraforming it to fit their needs. Usually by itself these can be accompanied by fleets of smaller ships in case the planet that is being taken is known to have military power behind it and they could attack the Planet Taker which has little defense against enemies. Due to the high-material cost and the time it takes to build one there are only a few Planet Takers and so they often take the upmost care into protecting this expensive piece of equipment and still heavily rely on other, older methods to continue their expansion.
