Description

This past week, something I’d been worrying about for months finally came to pass: after only one short season, ABC canceled The Muppets and another piece of my childhood curled up and died. In my humble opinion, this sitcom was the best thing the Muppets have been involved with in decades, so this is a huge blow to me and this franchise.  They were doing some really cool new stuff and I felt like it could only have gotten better.  However, I guess too many people had their own preconceived notions of what the Muppets are supposed to be based on vague, inaccurate memories of a forty year old TV show.  They couldn’t stand to see the characters evolve and grow into something more sophisticated.  How dare they make veiled allusions to sex and drugs!  And where the heck are Elmo and Cookie Monster?

I have my doubts the Muppets can recover from this latest setback or even if they should bother to try.  They seemed poised for a major revival in 2011, but just as quickly, audiences and critics seemed to get bored with them.  Anything after this show could only feel like a massive step down.  Since small-minded idiots are stubbornly convinced that the Muppets are only for children, are Kermit and pals going to end up demoted to doing a show for preschoolers on Disney Junior?  Frankly, before anything like that transpires, I’d just as soon see them quietly fade into obscurity like their puppet show predecessors, Howdy Doody and Kukla, Fran and Ollie.

I was more excited about this show than any other Muppet project since I was a kid.  TBH, even the critically lauded 2011 movie was not enough to fully rekindle my enthusiasm for this franchise.  My excitement for the show even inspired me to do my first Muppet fan art in a very long time, which was also one of my more ambitious pieces.

I should have known better than to get my hopes up.  Nothing ever works out for me or the things I care about.  My friend Daphne has said a couple times to me now, “If there’s love in your life, there’s pain in your future.”  Well, I’m finding it hard to find a reason for me to care about things anymore.  What’s the point? More often than not, you’ll just end up getting your heart stomped on and your dreams crushed in the end.

To hell with ABC, to hell with the critics and the fickle viewing public, to hell with the stupid, archaic Nielsen rating system.  To hell with everything.

It was nice to see the Muppets on TV again, even if it was for just a little while.

I really liked the show, myself. Not perfect, but very entertaining.

Good, if sad, picture.

i think part of the problem was there was a big switch compared tot he two movies we just seen.  I agree this could defiantly be a cool thing to see them try and do. Unfortunately the way they went about it ended up becoming too controversial and  hated because of the shifted mood change. Also even in the older style of the Muppet's they hinted at subjects like this.

This is so sad. I really loved the new show.

It's at least nice to know I wasn't the only person who was enjoying it.

Ow, sorry man, its always painful when something you love gets the shaft, I felt the same way when firefly got killed after one season too. But don't give up on things I can promise you there's always something new to hope for.

Thanks, man.  I still haven't seen Firefly, even now that it's streaming for free on a channel I get through my Roku.  I guess I'm afraid of falling in love with it and getting mad that it was canceled.

While I somewhat enjoyed the show, it came off as a rip off of 30-rock more than anything else. There was great writing involved, and they still felt like the muppets should, but I was let down that I didn't care enough about the story arcs they were putting forth to keep watching.

I'm sad that they didn't last long enough to find their stride, but I stopped watching mid-season because it just didn't pull me in.

Nice art, by the way.  You need to Tweet, Tumblr, Instagram or whatever that thing!  It is fucking awesome!

D, the Muppets are awesome.  The show just sucked.  Too much focus on Piggy and that fucking network consultant character was an ill-advised "Office" ripoff; I cringed every time he was on the screen.  They'll bounce back, most likely in cinema form.

The good news is there is a whole world of vintage content for us to enjoy.  The Marx Bros. are dead and gone, but they left behind a legacy of films and skits to appreciate.  Let's celebrate what we have and build on that.

Which reminds me, I need to go back and watch Fraggle Rock.  That show was epic!

I don't believe for a second that Disney invested their money in these characters in order to abandon them this quickly.  Maybe a new prime-time network show isn't in their future, but Disney owns, like, half the cable universe.  They're going to wind up somewhere.  And if there's any loyalty to the original concept at all, it should be worth watching.

As to Jim Henson.  Everybody's gonna go sometime RD.  None of us should be surprised at anyone checking out at any time.  I am reminded of a Calvin and Hobbes my daughter and I read over dinner this evening (because we read stories and comics together over dinner when mom works late), where Calvin makes a nightmarish monster of a snowman and declares it to represent the "Horror of Existence weighed against the Terror of Non-being," and says "It will become even more poignant as it melts."  That sums up life.  You don't want to live, but holy crap, there's nothing to be gained by dying!

Right, Disney wouldn't just give up on the Muppets.  That's why the ad for the Disney collectible shareholder certificate I got in the mail featured the Muppets so prominently.  Oh, wait, they're not there at all.  They've depicted Walt surrounded by various characters: Mickey, Jack Sparrow, Iron Man, Dory, Pooh, Elsa and C-3PO, just to name a few.  They've even got freaking Lightning McQueen from Pixar's Cars for crying out loud.  But no Kermit or Miss Piggy.

Cripes, I'm sorry, I was clearly in a sour mood when I uploaded this and maybe I went overboard in my pessimism.

I imagine Lightning McQueen sold a lot of Hot Wheels merchandise.  Which is the only reason they make Cars and Planes movies.

Still.  I don't think it would make sense to write the Muppets off.  Disney bought them up so they could have a stranglehold on every cherished childhood memory that every kid in America ever had, and they are going to figure out some way to make it pay off for them.  It might wind up being even worse than seeing them forgotten.

Aww, I'm really sorry to hear this. I don't have TV, so I never got a chance to each this series. But I imagine that I would have loved it, since the 2011 movie was so shockingly good.
