Well, I imagine an elf costume might be slightly less embarrassing... unless you're actually referring the fairy costume that's depicted here, in which case the Victorian/Edwardian getup would definitely be the preferable choice.Β Β

Nice, we get some pretty good Oliver Mouse pics, I think the astronaut one is cute (I seem to recall he mentioned wanting to be an astronaut when he grew up) and his expression from meeting the alien gave me a laugh, fairy Oliver was also cute (maybe like somting from one of his dreams), and of course Oliver in the frilly victorian (I think) outfit is cute too, especially with his bemused expression. (the story does mention him attending a Church, so I'm guessing this is Mrs. Tabby's idea of his "Sunday best" since he obviously can't go in any of the outfits she usually dresses him in)
I also thought you did a pretty spot on job of recreating the Fred, Barney and Pebbles and Max and Goofy, they all look like they did in original cartoons which is pretty impressive (I think I recognize the Goofy and Max one as a scene from A Goofy Movie) Joker and Harley are a little different from the cartoon but still look great, and I think you got Popeye down too. I think I recognize the guy with the cigarette and the two different glasses, he's Spider Jerusalem from Transmetropolitan right? Also found the one of your avatar with the big bugged out eyes pretty darn funny.
My favorite is actually the girl at the bottom, I find somthing really charming about the sketchy style and the tree and the grass.

Thanks.Β Yes, that is Spider from Transmetropolitan.Β Unlike the other famous cartoon characters pictured here, I sketched Joker and Harley without really consulting any references; I kind of wanted to try drawing them in my own style; that's why they came out looking a little odd.
There's something ironic to me about the fact that the character that Mrs. Tabby is based on is a churchgoer and that she says stuff about "the Lord" blessing her, though I'm not sure why I should find that so incongruous, since there are obviously tons of religious people who are horrible human beings.Β Rewatching the movie Spotlight this weekend helped remind me of that truth, though it's not like I really needed the reminder.Β Β
The bottom drawing was tough to scan since I sketched it very lightly on watercolor paper with the intention of possibly turning it into a painting later on.Β The paper has this bumpy texture, so I had to clean it up quite a bit in Photoshop to make the drawing visible.Β Β

It remains one of my favorite comics that I've read, though I remember thinking the Smiler story arc was a little too far fetched.Β Ironically, now I kind of feel like it doesn't go far enough.

I bought this OOP Popeye DVD set off of eBay, but a couple of the discs turned out to be defective, and then I had a hell of a time trying to arrange a return/refund, either due to poor communication or because the seller was deliberately stalling or they just didn't know what the hell they were doing.Β My best guess and most generous interpretation was that it was pure ineptitude on their part.Β With time running out to do so, I finally asked eBay to intervene and the matter was resolved within minutes.Β When I sent back the DVDs, I did that little doodle on the return slip to subtly indicate my displeasure with the seller's poor handling of the situation.
I'm not unaware that Oliver, Bianca and the caricature of myself have slightly similar hair, particularly the way it curls up in the back.Β It's not a deliberate choice; I just seem to fall into these patterns, like when I was a kid and several of the characters I drew ended up with hairstyles resembling ALF's.Β I hadn't noticed, however, that Bianca's hair also sort of curls up on the sides like mine as well.Β I suppose many of the characters I create are some extension of myself, whether I'm conscious of it or not, but I never thought of Bianca as my female alter ego.Β Β It's hard to say how I view her since I've just never figured out what to do with the character.Β Oliver's hair actually looks more like mine... at least, the way it used to look when I was very young, before I turned brunette.
