It's taken some time but I'm hoping this shows some improvement on my previous work.I'm a long way of the level of realism I hope to one day reach.
All credit for the pose has to go to Lev Dolgachov the photographer who's photo I used as a reference.
A3 Smooth Bristol
5H-2B Faber Castell 9000 pencils
Blending stump
Derwent pencil eraser
Lots of frustration.
Any one found using my work without my permission will be forced to listen to the Barney song on a continuous loop for a full week. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Honest critiques welcome as I'm self taught and need to know what I could do better.
I'm entering this into the Improve Yourself Challenge at
I'm using this both to encourage me to start drawing again, to develop my level of realism, improve my rendering of hair and tackle at least one new texture such as fabric.

This is outstanding! I know you've heard this before, but I certainly thought it was a photograph. Even when I clicked on it, I couldn't tell it was a drawing. I was awestruck when I read your artist's comments and learned that you're just freakin' talented.
I have a lot of respect for artists like you who are always seeking to improve. You're incredible, but you're humble. You have a lot of skill, and I'm not worried about your aim towards realism--you've achieved it with this drawing.
My only concern is her left hand. (Her left, our right.) It looks a tad bit wonky to me; I'm sure that's how it was in the reference photograph, but often times it's necessary to change the reference... Even so, this drawing is so close to perfect that it hardly matters. Again, you're incredible!

I totally agree with the hand issue and a few other area's where the lighting obscured edges. Alas at this moment in time I'm still very much a beginner so lacked the confidence to be anything more than a human photocopier.
This is something I hope with more practice I can resolve so that I can truly make my drawings my own.

This is an exquisite piece of work. You have the skin, shading, muscular and tendon rendering at a complete 10. No question.
I also thought "photo" until the hair, it just looks a bit stiff. As if she had too much hair product at the roots of the part.
Gods I hate doing these...LOl.
You talent is extraordinary. There is absolutely no reason to to think otherwise, but you asked so I wanted to answer as honestly as possible.

I really do appreciate constructive criticism and I wish more deviants were brave enough to give honest opinions. I totally agree about the hair and this is very much how it looked in the reference. This was my first serious attempt at hair, so due to lack of confidence I merely copied what was in front of me rather than being brave and attempting to give it a more natural flowing look.
I still have a long way to go as far as learning, but comments like this are the most useful, so rather feeling uncomfortable being honest, accept that it's of more use than just saying "Nice". Thank you so much for taking the time for this.

It was a pleasure to see your work, and I do so much get the "Crap, I have not done this before, do what they do" syndrome. I find myself do that with my photography as well. I so much want to be good, that I try to be them. Which will never work.

Most of the improvement I've made has been since joining dA, so make the most of all the really helpful great artists and tutorials on here and I wish you every success in reaching your drawing goal.

You can be and you will be if it's what you want.
There is no end of help here on dA, so use it and don't be afraid to ask questions when you need to, most artist on here are happy to help anyone who is serious about improving.
