It's a very nice picture! I believe Generation Films used this a thumbnail for their "5 WW2 Fighter Myths" video.

Is that New Zealand markings or RNAF markings?  I never could tell the difference.

Yeah, that makes sense.  After all, the red circle that was originally on the white star was removed shortly after the war began so American a/c wouldn't be confused with Japanese because of it.

Nice work. I play War Thunder quite a bit, and I know that if I see a A6M# on fire, than I know it's only a matter of time before he's a smoking wreck on the ground somewhere. Only the final models of the Zero had self-sealing fuel tanks, and even then it just wasn't enough. The fuel was highly combustible (as is typically required for AvGas), and if the tanks ruptured, it was almost certainly fatal for the plane. Also, judging by the cockpit, I imagine that the pilots insides are now on the outside... and all over the unarmored cockpit...

Baron-Engel [2015-11-02 20:10:40 +0000 UTC]

Question. That very pale blue white color on the Spitfire was that a special paint scheme only used by the RAF in the Pacific theater?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Bad-Rabbit-Design In reply to Baron-Engel [2015-11-04 09:10:56 +0000 UTC]

Baron-Engel,

It was an RAAF scheme and not common at all, natural metal finish except for:

1. the anti-glare panel in Night which extends over the windshield framing and the leading edge of the bubble canopy.
2. the area around the dorsal radio antenae.
3. the leading edges and tail empennage in white which extended halfway up the the cannon fairings.

The white and natural metal would reflect the blue sky and take on that hue.
Australian and British paints were made of much higher quality materials than American paints with much finer pigments resulting in a reflective sheen.
I hope this helps and rOEN911 does not object to this "thread-jacking".

Baron-Engel In reply to Bad-Rabbit-Design [2015-11-04 18:45:12 +0000 UTC]

Ah, so it was a bare metal finish similar to what USAAF did for some their fighters. Just minus some of the very gaudy colors they'd include sometimes.

Bad-Rabbit-Design In reply to Baron-Engel [2015-11-05 03:10:17 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's right, the same as 28 Squadron RAF did in Hong Kong on their Spitfire FR.XVIII's.

"Zero in trouble" - well, since it's on fire and the only ways a fire on a Japanese aeroplane went out were when it crashed, or it exploded in mid air...

Griffon? I'm not totally sure, but the pic is simply amazing!! Your job is always stunning!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

paws4thot In reply to Dragolisco [2015-11-02 14:35:52 +0000 UTC]

Nope; it's a Vb with the Merlin 45 and B wing, in SEAC markings.

Griffin variants always have 12 exhaust stubs.

paws4thot In reply to Dragolisco [2015-11-02 16:48:54 +0000 UTC]

No problem, but I should probably add that late Merlin variants also have 12 stubs, and some early machines in preservation do or did (because 12 stub sets were about a tenth the price of 6 stub sets).

See camriley.com/spitfires/ .  Seems like it's a bare metal Spit V.

Small-Brown-Dog In reply to JML54 [2015-11-02 09:44:37 +0000 UTC]

I think you are right and the MkV is a well modeled varient but it just hit me as a later Mk9.
Possibly it is the angle doing this to me as the nose seems longer (to me). Also I think I wrongly associate the second cannon fairing collar as being after the MK5 but I do get confused with the various wing configurations.

Hell of of an image though

Bad-Rabbit-Design In reply to Small-Brown-Dog [2015-11-04 09:13:26 +0000 UTC]

The image this was based on, shows it as an Australian, not RAF SEAC Spitfire Mk.VIII.
