was holding a contest to design a character for a comic, so I decided to give it a shot. I need all the practice I can get with my new tablet

This is Jali, the mother of Sarafina!

The first thing that popped into my head was her coloring. Nala and Sarafina both look very different from the other characters of TLK. Mufasa, Taka, Simba, and the like are all brown and golden colors while Nala and Sarafina are lighter and almost pinkish in hue. That pseudo-albino coloring had to some from somewhere (and was probably a recessive trait, given Simba and Nala's offspring both being golden) so either one or both of Sarafina's parents must have had that light coloring. Thus: Jali's appearance.

I didn't really think of a detailed backstory for her, but I figured she was probably from a different pride in a different part of the continent (maybe somewhere with mountains?). As Sarafina ends up being a similar color, Jali's mate was most likely from the same pride factoring in the recessive gene for lighter fur color. Hell, he could've been the king of that pride for all we know. I'd say sometime briefly after Jali and her mate decide to have a cub, the pride is attacked by a rival male and the pride's male(s) are killed. They then begin the process of getting rid of the cubs born from the previous male(s)'s bloodline(s), as most lions do (or they could be particularly cruel, that's up to the discretion of the comic writer). At this point Jali knows she's pregnant, so she flees in the middle of the night and runs off to seek sanctuary in the Pridelands. A few months later, Sarafina is born.
