Kithood: Shellkit was born to parents Frostedsholder (Mother) and Ratbelly (Father) during winter, one of Shellpaw's first sensations being the cold ground against her small body followed by the warmth of her mother's tongue cleaning her off. She was one of four kits, only two of which survived the first week. Shellkit's mother grew very protective of her remaining kits, Shellkit and her sister, Featherkit and wouldn't let them go anywhere or play with other kits in fear that they would get hurt. Featherkit, the more adventurous of the two eventually grew sick of being confined by their mother and urged Shellkit to come with her on an adventure outside of the camp. The two kits sneaked out when their parents were asleep, feeling the freedom course through them as they walked through Shadowclan territory all alone. The two came upon a strange shiny object, a snare trap, and unaware of what it was inspected it. The snare trap snapped down on Featherkit's tail as the pair turned to leave. Shellkit managed to pull her sister's mangled tail out of the trap yet the blood wouldn't stop coming. Looking around in panic, she found moss and pressed it on the wound to slow the bleeding. She recalled the medicine cat using cobwebs yet decided moss would have to do until she could get help. She heard the frantic screams of her parents and a few others, a group sent to look for the missing kits. Shellkit called them as loud as she could, letting out a breath of relief when they were found. Her sister was quickly sent to the medicine cat den, her fluffy tail severed in half. Shellkit visited her sister everyday and did what she could to help make Featherkit feel better. Her clan noticed her ability with medicine and appointed her medicine cat apprentice.

Medicine Cat Apprenticehood: As Honeybrook apprentice she was determined to help others so that they didn't have to feel the pain that Featherpaw did. Shellpaw looks up to Honeybrook and believes she is one of the smartest cats in the clan and hopes that she can be just as good of a medicine cat as she is. She admires the medicine cat for how well she coped with the loss of her mentor and became such a strong member to the clan. After Honeybrook's death she was heartbroken and feels the weight of the pressure of being the sole medicine cat for Shadowclan on her shoulders.
