Hey, I just found your pix on Vier'Taz and I think they are great! As for being "overdone," I would not sweat it. Drow are the best. I'd keep writing/drawing him and his adventures, if I were you, even if you only write/draw for yourself.
I just wish I had the talent to draw like you do. I have to settle with writing my drow's story. If they are never published, I'm fine with that. But it won't stop me from writing.
I've played a drow since 1st ed (a good two years before Drizzt ever popped into Salvatore's mind (and don't get me wrong, I love Drizzt). The way I get around playing a drow on the surface is to disguise him until the other characters get to know Tomrim.

I'm trying to write a D&D fanfic but ofcourse all I have are the rule books. My friend tells me I really need to play the game to get the full feeling of it. Otherwise I'd be biteing off more than I can chew. Unfortunately there's no groups near where I live so it's impossible for me to get to play it yet.

ah don't let that stop you. Go to SOLAR or NERO they are live action fantasy role playing games that are just as much fun, if not more so...and they will greatly assist anyone who wants to really "feel" the characters.

I wish WE had a drow. I mean, our elf is a custom class called a Hunter (like a ranger, but theif driven and with bonuses to ranged combat, and negatives to close combat, and things like 'hide in foliage') with a freaking easy bake oven. PLUS ONE.
Freaking wood elves...(well, really, he's an OK guy, but the Easy Bake oven is making me want to stab my friend sometimes.)
So he can make cookie followers and at +5 he can revive people by baking them.
I need to talk to my DM. Seriously.

do What I did...
Have the DM kill off your current character. Then introduce a new character at the same level as your old. Only they are a heinous dark elf.
RP by passing the DM notes in a small note book. Jot down die rolls and other secret info. and become...a PC Killer! Muahahaha~!
ahem...
or you could just come in and be a bad ass version of Drizzt or Lyriel...and be "good" (mutter mutter)

Problem is its not me, so I'd have to kill my friend, and that could have some serious consequences, what being a neutral good theif and all...
Seriously, half the party can go one on one with me and kick my ass...

RollerBoyjeremy In reply to StiqFigurMaster [2007-04-18 12:33:35 +0000 UTC]
that's why you make a new character, and MAKE SURE you secretly pass the DM notes. THe point of drow is that they never get caught.
neutral good thief? That has to be difficult to play out.

No offense, but i'm pretty much done plotting to kill my fellow players. I'm just not doing it, goes against my style.
Here's the deal. I'm human. He's a wood elf. Thats it. Thats how its gonna be. Also, he actually kinda wanted to become a drow after I brought this up (minus the killing).
LOL, no offense, but I'm probably not going to ask for your "advice" again for a while. LOL.
Seriously, how did we get here? you pretty much lost me at "kill your character off".

Mine finally got a ring of the drow.
(you may find this usefull, it is located in the Underdark compainion, or you can find it at the Forgottenrelms web site.)
...or you can copy, paste into word and print it out from here.. LOL
This item is made of eight strands of different unique metals entwined to form a ring. The drow found it troublesome when their magical items deteriorated upon leaving their underground homeland for long periods of time; to combat this, they created this ring.
The ring of the drow is only made in the drow homelands by clerics of Lolth. Its purpose is to keep drow-made items the wearer possesses from deteriorating. To do so, the ring radiates an aura of magical energy that duplicates the radiations deep in the drow homelands. This aura only affects the wearer and the wearer's possessions.
As a side effect of the ring's magical aura, a detect magic spell reveals the wearer to radiate magic strongly. In addition, a detect evil shows the wearer of one of these rings as evil, and a know alignment indicates that the wearer is chaotic evil, regardless of the wearer's true alignment. If the wearer uses the psionic power of aura alteration to try to change the aura, the wearer must save vs. spells or else change alignment to chaotic evil. If the wearer saves, or if the wearer fails the save but is already chaotic evil, the psionic power functions normally, and the ring's aura is temporarily changed.
To possess one of these rings is considered an honor among the drow, because it signifies that the wearer has traveled far from the homeland, and that he or she was aided by a cleric favored by Lolth.
Drow will kill any creature other than a drow who possesses one of these rings.
XP Value: 1,000 (to drow); nil to others
GP Value: 5,000 (to drow); 1,000 to
others

Hm, I don't that'd work for -my- girl. She left because she's scared of spiders and mindflayers. I'll definitely keep it in mind if my DM ever decides to take us into the underdark, which is rather doubtful at this stage. I'm not even sure if there IS an underdark beneath this world we're on. I think he just let me play my sorceress for zee boobies - And the conflict with the party elf, of course. Most useful spell EVER for annoying elves. Level 0 Cantrip from the Underdark book - "Stick!"

Ever since drizzt came out- it seems that half of the drow populace (player populace) ecided to just apear- and become non underground living creatures. I swear, almost no-one played drow before that- period. Makes this little DM shed a tear for the gith races...
Anyways, it looks good, very lively colors.

I was introduced to Drow at a SOLAR ( [link] )event in atlanta GA when I was in college. I thought they were cool because they got to have BLACK makeup and were of course, evil. So many back stabbings.
It was fun playing SOLAR, I do miss our monthly jaunts out there. But then My Roomie in 1999 drew a web comic for SOLAR and the drow was BY FAR the funniest character ( [link] )
I liked them, but then in a role playing game this year past my elf died. PC kill...and I was left w/o a character. I wanted somthing fun, somthing original, and somthing that wasn't already in the party.
I flipped through the manual, and then remebered DROW.
My Gamer group moaned and declaired they didn't want and ANGSTY drow.
I was like...drow are angsty???? well then I will make a irritable, angry drow teenage warrior, whom is out of place in the group.
THen like with all my PC's I started my reserch.
I went to Barns and Nobels and asked the book lady if she knew what drow were. She led me to the D&D section, and she was a Rper, which made things easy. she Showed me Forgotten relms books on the Spider queen and the Underdark.
then she led me to R.A. salvatores collected works. I purchased three of the collected. (Dark Elf Trilogy, Icewinddale Trilogy, and The legacy of the drow) When I read them I was like. OMG!!!!! the drow ROCK!
So I went and did reserch some more, obtained the book of drow, and the drow PC guide, as well as a drow dictionary. (when I Rp I try to larp)
The next game Vier'Taz arrived on the team, his back story printed out on 8 typed ms word 8 point single spaced pages. My gaiming group was astounded. I had decorated a 3 ring binder to look like a black spell book with Lolths symbol on it, and filled it with facts, family histories and other things for my character. As we played, I took notes, and started writing out our adventures.
My group read them, and said I should try to get them published. I was of course discouraged, when so MANY online people, and other people I knew personally told me frankly. "Drow are over done, I'm sick of them."
I was like, wait, I found somthing I LIKE on 'MY OWN' without being led into it by hype. I thought I was being original...
And everyone else was like... "YOU'RE NOT"
So I look at it this way...if I can accidently stumble apon a DROW Fan club, and join, and have fun, and share my fandom... Then consider me one of the rabid drow fans. ^.^
But of course, note, MY drow doesn't like not being underground, and if he hadn't been forced into the party by circumstance he'd probably kill them all and return to his queen and his people. Of course he's telling the party that he's reformed, because Frankly the 9th level paladin could squash his 1st level ass.
ah, I miss my dear Tris, My high elf...who was cut down by the party for saving their asses with chain lightning and harpies...sadly the mage was offended by another player using chain lightning. (sob)
I Also Miss my original character, Table, the Halfling. He was so nice, cute, and thief like. Unfortunately when you become dragon smere you are dragon smere.
Then there was my Fav of all, Nore Star...the poor kid turned into a centaur...ever Try a dungeon crawl with a centaur? Yea, he drowned. LOL.
often I am reminded of the dead ale wives club when My game meets...they really like to kill shit, and me...

I ran across the same thing when I asked my group to let me play a drow. I got into drow by picking up the forgotten realms guides actually, and read R.A. Salvatore afterwords. I was in the middle of a LotR game though, si I began to play online on yahoo. Had fun with that for a long while (even though it seemed at the time barely anyone knew what a drow WAS and then just thought it was an odd colored elf...) I even modernized one of my drow for an rp XD In the end, about any backstory, I just forgot about worring over if I was being original or not. Everyone seems to cliam that their drow is unique. Well, aren't they all right? So lots of people like to play surface drow, their reasons are all different, right? One of mine just happened that way, and another goes both ways, while my third wouldn't see the light of day if it killed him. I did have a drow bard though, and that was the oddest drow I've had I think.

I mean if you say, I'm making a character...doen't that imply it's original...geeze.
Look at Japanese Anime & Manga, In Nihon (japan) artists copy character designs and concepts off of each other like rabid wolverines, and they get published w/o anyone pointing fingers.
Japanese people understand creation by inspiration, and are accepting of it. Unlike here where we are so possesive of our "originality" that we forget that sometimes great minds think alike. No?

I agree with that. Any idea in the world could be looked at hard enough to find similarities with someone else's ideas. Look at internet role players who choose a story line to play with, or a world from an anime or movie. It's for FUN. People get touchy. o.o

I know how it feels to start Liking things due to personal whim, then they become popular later - I have actually given up on a few intrests due to that. Over hype makes me queezy...
I must say my favorite characters are either my Centaur Bard, or the Human Multiclass... The centaur was created due to the party Fouling a wish spell. Ask for easy and always accessable transport,a nd your bard gets a big ass. After that the Djini Attacked adn the bard descovered one of the good things about being half horse- you can distance yourself from the pain much faster!
Hm... I actually think you're more skilled with traditional mediums. Your controll of them is great, and leads to much more intresting textures than digital means would.

so many fun ops for you to kick ass take names, and be called a talking 'muke'
Acyually I felt that way about HP...In 1997 I was BIG into the 'rosie o'donnel' show, and worked part time at a library. One day she had a guest on her show. A shy woman, who came from a poverse Back ground working full time to support her kids. She came on and laughed about watering down milk just to make it last longer. This rather camera nervouse woman twisted a kerchif as she spoke and looked like she was trembling.
Rosie O'donnel announced her book, how it was selling every well in London, and gave everyone in the audience a signed 1st edition copy. (FREE)
of course back then she only had one book, and was shyly admitting to writing a second.
I was like, "oh, poor woman..." when the book came in with the new childrens shipment. I was the first to 'borrow it.' I liked it, thought, 'woa, this is good.' and moved on. actually around the same time other books had come out and I was rabidly reading Tadd Williams series at the time.
THen, kids would come in, and soon there was a waiting list for the HP book. when the second came out, I borrowed it too. "better" i decided. We had a talk one evening about repainting the childrens wing in the library and the librarian wanted to get ideas for book characters to paint. I was like, what about this HP character? She was like, "No I was thinking classical stories, that children will all know and love..." (we did peter Pan,Alice in wonderland, Tom sawyer...etc etc etc...)
HA! She's eating her words NOW!

Lol! Yeah, HP is becoming quite a figure in modern fantasy literature. It's quite amazing actually- but I have no quam with that! If it gets the new generation to read, and maybe act as a "gateway drug" into bigger and better books, all the more power to them.

One whom I think of as a very close friend and her equally important sister, they are the ones who made the point about Drow being Β© Forgotten Relms, and that the chances of me getting them to allow me to publish a book about drow was slim and none, seeing as drow fans/writers are a dime a dozen....
I became very depressed, and well, put the story on the back burner. ^.^&
